Bushy

Hey Princess, why don't you get your head out of your ass and admit that people can have opinions that don't exactly match your uber-liberalness?

Oh wait, that's exactly what you just said... :???: See? Goddamnit, I have a cookie stuck in my throat... This blows.

I know that not everyone agrees with what I say Bushy. I'd think though, that you'd realize that I have a bit more education than you do when it comes to things like stem cells. But let's not think that someone with a college education knows anything at all about stem cells, that wouldn't be a good idea

When one has their head up their ass, that is usually what they find.

ok, i talked with my parents on this Stem Cell thing, and my issue is where the stem cells are coming from. if researchers can get the cells somewhere besides aborted fetuses, i don't really have an opinion either way. but since my belief is such that abortion is wrong in the first place, i'm not exactly thrilled with extracting the stem cells. seems to me that if they want to get stem cells from aborted fetuses, it's the whole "end justifies the means" thing.

Stem cells don't come from aborted fetuses. They come from frozen embryoes in fertility clinics. I suppose they could come from abortions, but....they don't.

You see, in the process of fertility clinicness, several embryoes are created, but only a few are chosen for implantation...or something like that, so the rest are frozen and eventually destroyed. Technically not an abortion, they have 0 chance for survival...unless you want to go donate your womb :p

Of course, as many times as this is pointed out...even in this very thread, people seem to really want to cling to their preconcieved notion that people are making babies to be ripped from the womb and torn apart for their stem cells

And also, by the time that you find out that you're pregnant, the embryo is no longer a blastula, the stem cells have started differentiating and in fertility clinics the embryos don't make it past the blastula stage and haven't yet started to differentiate

Here we are...this says it better than I can:

"Specifically, embryonic stem cells are derived from embryos that develop from eggs that have been fertilized in vitro?in an in vitro fertilization clinic?and then donated for research purposes with informed consent of the donors. They are not derived from eggs fertilized in a woman's body. The embryos from which human embryonic stem cells are derived are typically four or five days old and are a hollow microscopic ball of cells called the blastocyst. "

If there is, there should be some pretty strict rules for it...

"the patient's decision must be freely made"

Yes, unless they cannot make that desicion (coma); where I think there should be like a family member or guardian who with consent of maybe a 2nd source can make the desicion. Must be unamious within family.

"well-considered and persistent; there must be unbearable suffering; "

Of course...cannot be like a 1 time blue funk

"and the attending physician should consult with a colleague."

Yes.

Maybe a few others....I am for it, if we support the death penalty in the US, why cant we have euthanasia? Same thing except with willing people who cannot be helped. I just don't want it to have a big contreversy where something went wrong...

I have no problem with doctor-assisted suicide. That decision is between you and whoever or whatever you think you'll meet on the other side. I also don't have a problem with taking a patient off life support if they have a living will stating that wish or are totally braindead.
