Star Wars News & Features

News and information from a Galaxy Far Far Away, and sometimes a little closer to home.

Images that seem to reveal a new Stormtrooper helmet design have been leaked online through Indie Revolver.

The images, which are said to have come from a reliable source, draw inspiration from the original Ralph McQuarrie concepts and build upon the classic Stormtrooper look of the original trilogy to bring a more modern and up to date feel to the Imperial soldiers we already know.

The images have not yet been confirmed officially but since the leak photographs have also been seen of physical props, and other Stormtrooper designs such as an updated Snowtrooper.

Disney has revealed that announcements regarding Star Wars presence in the company's theme parks will be coming next year.

The comments came from CEO Bob Iger during an interview with Variety. He confirmed that Disney will significantly expand the presence of Star Wars in Disney parks, confirming rumors from last year about the theme park plans.

According to Iger, plans will be revealed next year and will also show Disney leveraging its collection of other properties such as Marvel and Pixar, pointing out that their attractions are always more successful when they are branded.

Marvel has announced three new Star Wars comic series at San Diego Comic Con 2014.

It was only a matter of time before Marvel jumped back into Star Wars after the deal with Dark Horse Comics ended last year, and at Comic Con we have seen the reveal of not one but three new series, which will be the first contributions to Star Wars from Marvel since the 1980s.

The first, simply titled Star Wars, seems to follow the heroes of the Rebel Alliance shortly after the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. It will hit shelves in January 2015, written by Jason Aaron, and illustrated by John Cassaday.

Star Wars: Darth Vader will also follow the story past A New Hope, but this time focusing on the Dark Lord and his recovery from defeat after the destruction of the first Death Star. It is due out in February 2015, written by Kieron Gillen and drawn by Salvador Larroca.

Star Wars: Princess Leia is a miniseries following everybody's favourite princess as she laments the destruction of Alderaan and grows as a leader of the Rebellion. Due in March 2015, it will be written by Mark Waid with art by Terry Dodson.

    Mark Hamill shows his face

    By Andy, in The Movies,

Mark Hamill has been spotted sporting a fine growth of facial hair worthy of a Jedi Master.

On the red carpet in London at the UK premiere of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy this week, Mark Hamill posed for cameras as he exhibited his masterful facial hair, reminiscent of the beard worn by Sir Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars trilogy.

Speaking to the BBC's Lizo Mzimba he explained that he was "contractually obliged" to grow the beard for his role in Star Wars Episode VII, and that it signified Luke Skywalker's role as the mentor figure, like Obi-Wan Kenobi before him.

Hamill also revealed how surprised he is to be returning to Star Wars all these years later, and says that he never intended to return to the galaxy far far away. But so far he seemed impressed with the talent of the new cast and is confident that the future of Star Wars is in good hands.

Disney has revealed new trailers this week revealing new information about upcoming animated series Star Wars Rebels.

The cast of Star Wars Episode VII may have been too busy to attend San Diego 2014, but that didn't stop Disney from showing off the latest trailer for the Star Wars Rebels animated TV series.

This complements the trailer released earlier this week, that revealed the appearance of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the series. Rebels is set five years before A New Hope, and promises to carry on the way that The Clone Wars left off, with an all-action storyline that pits a band of rebels against the oppressive Galactic Empire.

The Clone Wars "veteran" James Arnold Taylor is reprising his role as the voice of Obi-Wan, and will be joined by Billy Dee Williams, who despite not being confirmed for Episode VII has now joined the cast of Rebels in his familiar role as scoundrel Lando Calrissian.

    Episode VII X-wing revealed

    By Andy, in The Movies,

During the latest Force for Change video message, JJ Abrams has teased us with a glimpse at a new starfighter for Star Wars Episode VII.

Latest: Since this article was published, the mystery starfighter has been confirmed as an updated version of the X-wing starfighter. Higher resolution images show the detail of the seam where the wings, or S-foils, split to create the distinctive X-wing shape.

    Original outdated article continues below.

The starship resembles an X-wing similar to those seen in the classic Star Wars trilogy, but seems to lack the split wing arrangement, leading to fan speculation that it may be based on the expanded universe's Z-95 Headhunter.

The dual engine set-up is similar to the Z-95 version seen in The Clone Wars TV series, so this starfighter may represent an upgraded model of those ships used by clone trooper pilots.

American director Rian Johnson has been hired to direct Star Wars Episode VIII.

It seems JJ Abrams is not sticking around after Star Wars Episode VII, and a new face has been cast as the director for the next instalment of the Star Wars saga.

Rian Johnson, director of 2012's sci-fi action thriller Looper starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis, has also recently won a DGA award for directing an episode of the hit TV show Breaking Bad.

    Boba Fett Lives!

    By Andy, in The Movies,

George Lucas has confirmed that Boba Fett did survive the Sarlacc pit.

During an interview with Star Wars historian JR Rinzler, creator George Lucas apparently confirmed that the fan favourite bounty hunter no longer officially saw his demise in the Sarlacc pit at the end of Star Wars Episode VI: Return of the Jedi.

It has been long established in the Star Wars Expanded Universe that Fett had managed to escape and live a long life outside the movies, but this marks the first time that Lucas has stated that he survived the encounter.

Lucasfilm has revealed that Josh Trank has signed on to direct the second Star Wars spin-off movie.

Confirming the news in a statement on Wednesday, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy announced that they are thrilled to welcome Josh Trank to the family and praised his creativity and imagination, stating that he was perfectly suited for Star Wars.

Josh Trank, who is currently working on 20th Century Fox's latest Fantastic Four movie, said "The magic of the Star Wars universe defined my entire childhood. The opportunity to expand on that experience for future generations is the most incredible dream of all time.

The first spin-off movie is due in 2016, which means that if the announcements are being released in the right order we will see Trank's contribution to the Star Wars franchise hit movie screens in 2018.

Game of Thrones cast member Gwendoline Christie and 12 Years a Slave Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o have joined the cast of Star Wars Episode VII, according to the official website.

Lupita Nyong’o, long rumored to be associated with the latest movie of the Star Wars saga has finally been confirmed by Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, who said in a statement that "it's thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape."

Nyong'o, who recently won an Academy Award for her portrayal of Patsey in Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave, is also joined by Gwendoline Christie, who plays Brienne of Tarth in HBO's Game of Thrones. Christie is an unfamiliar face on the big screen, but that may be set to change as she is also due to appear in the upcoming instalments of The Hunger Games movie adaptations.
