Star Wars News & Features

News and information from a Galaxy Far Far Away, and sometimes a little closer to home.

Disney XD's hit TV show Star Wars Rebels is due to return this summer, and brings with it the return of a character established in the expanded universe.

The return of Star Wars Rebels will be on 20th June 2015, it has been revealed, with a one-hour long premiere episode titled The Siege of Lothal. The episode was first shown to fans attending Celebration Anaheim earlier this year, and features the return of a fan favourite character established in the former Star Wars expanded universe television series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Ahsoka Tano was the padawan of Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker during the Clone Wars, and in many ways she was to that series what Ezra Bridger is to Rebels. Now an experienced Jedi in her own right, it has been said that she will become a mentor figure to the young Jedi in training.
Rebels season two also sees the return of Darth Vader, with James Earl Jones reprising the role of providing Vader's voice, and this is sure to bring trouble for the crew of the Ghost as Vader seeks to hunt down his former apprentice.

New official merchandise has been spotted that suggests C-3PO has had a slight costume change.

It's no surprise that some of the cast of The Force Awakens will have changed somewhat from their last Star Wars chronological appearance in Return of the Jedi. After all, thirty years have passed and our heroes have gone a little greyer, but intriguingly C-3PO seems to have undergone a color change of his own.
Recent pictures of merchandise spotted in Mexico - mainly a promotional Pepsi can design - have shown everybody's favorite protocol droid, C-3PO, sporting an arm painted an unfamiliar shade of red.
There was never any secret about Threepio being cobbled together from spare parts, The Phantom Menace showed us a young Anakin Skywalker building him in his mother's house, and more than one of the Star Wars movies have shown him in more than one piece.
How C-3PO came to be in possession of this oddly colored arm is not clear, but it does raise further questions about what has been going in the galaxy while we have been away.
The same image of the three droids and C-3PO's red arm has also been spotted on other officially licensed products, so the shot appears to be legitimate. Time will tell us whether this is a mistake, a temporary costume change, or something more permanent.

    Christopher Lee dies aged 93

    By Andy, in General News,

Sir Christopher Lee, known in the Star Wars universe for his portrayal of the fallen Jedi Count Dooku, has died at the age of 93.

According to reports, the legendary actor was admitted to Chelsea and Westminster hospital in London, after suffering respiratory problems and heart failure. He died on Sunday 7th June.
Sir Christopher Lee was a truly inspirational figure in the world of show business, with a career spanning seven decades and various forms of media; from cinema to opera to heavy metal. In 2009 he was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to drama and charity, and in 2011 he was awarded a Bafta fellowship.
He was responsible for the portrayal of iconic characters in movie history, and his most notable work included roles in Hammer horror movies. His first role for Hammer Studios saw him portray the creature in 1957's The Curse of Frankenstein opposite Peter Cushing, who twenty years later would later play Grand Moff Tarkin in Star Wars. Lee and Cushing became lifelong friends, and often appeared alongside each other on screen including in 1958 when they again starred opposite eachother, with Lee as Dracula and Cushing as his arch enemy, Abraham van Helsing.
His distinctive deep voice and tall stature meant that he instantly dominated any scene, and he went on to star in cult classic The Wicker Man in 1973 and also played the titular villain, Scaramanga, in the 1974 James Bond outing The Man With the Golden Gun.
In the late 1970s Lee moved to the United States to break the cycle of being typecast in horror movies, and was guest host for popular comedy show Saturday Night Live. Nevertheless, he did often end up in the role of the villain, and in the 2000s was reintroduced to a new audience when he became the evil wizard Saruman in The Lord of the Rings trilogy.
In 2002 he joined the Star Wars universe as Count Dooku, a Jedi Master who had left the order and joined the Sith and become Darth Tyranus in Attack of the Clones, and he reprised the role for Revenge of the Sith in 2005. George Lucas has paid tribute to him, saying; "Christopher was a great British actor of the old school. A true link to cinema's past and a real gentleman. We will miss him."
"Making films has never just been a job to me, it is my life."
    - Sir Chirstopher Lee, 1922 - 2015.

Star Wars: Uprising, due later this year, will show us the state of the galaxy in the aftermath of Return of the Jedi.

Developed by Kabam, Star Wars: Uprising is a new mobile game set after the events of the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi, where we finally saw the victory of the Rebel Alliance and the death of the Emperor. This new game which forms part of the official Star Wars canon storyline will give a glimpse of the aftermath of those events.
We already know that things aren't going to be rosy in that galaxy far far away by the time The Force Awakens rolls around, but what we don't know is how the Rebel victory fell short of achieving it's goal to restore the Republic. The trailer for Uprising suggests that new enemies are rising to fill the power vacuum left by the Emperor, and you'll get the chance to take them on.

Star Wars: Uprising is scheduled to release later this year for Android and iOS, with beta testing due this summer. Don't forget to check out the official Star Wars: Uprising site and sign up for updates.

If you're avoiding spoilers then you may not want to read this article about the latest reveal in Marvel's Star Wars comic series.

Since Disney swept away the old Star Wars Expanded Universe authors, such as those responsible for Marvel's new fully-approved official canon Star Wars comic series, have had a lot more freedom with the characters and storylines.
This is especially apparent now that Marvel Star Wars #6 has revealed that everybody's favourite scoundrel, Han Solo, may actually have been married during at least part of the original Star Wars trilogy. The shocking revelation comes when a woman introducing herself as Sana Solo arrives, announcing to Leia that she is his wife and stating "Han Solo belongs to me".
It is unknown whether Sana's claims are true, but the pair were definitely not on good terms, and she had spent a great deal of time travelling the galaxy trying to track Han down.
Marvel Star Wars is an official canon comic, slotting in the gap between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back. This means that while Han was busy trying to woo Princess Leia he had a wife who was trying to track him down. The storyline isn't yet finished, so things will certainly become more clear soon enough.

An interview on the official Star Wars website has revealed new details about Andy Serkis' character in The Force Awakens.

Andy Serkis has been a subject of much speculation since it was first annoucned that he had been cast in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but up until now we have only heard his voice in the first teaser trailer. Now, in an exclusive interview with photogropher Annie Leibovitz on the official Star Wars website, new details have emerged about the actor's character.
The character's visual appearance is still in question as the character is portrayed using motion capture technology, although it's possible we have caught a distant glimpse of him in The Force Awakens' second trailer, but the biggest reveal so far is his name and title: Supreme Leader Snoke.
Although this is just speculation, it is easy to infer that Supreme Leader Snoke may be the leader of The First Order, and is therefore analogous to Emperor Palpatine. We also know that Serkis did the voiceover for the first teaser trailer, "There has been an awakening. Have you felt it? The dark side and the light."
From this statement we can also conclude that this is Snoke speaking, and that he is familiar with the ways of the Force; he may even be affiliated with Kylo Ren, who we already know brandishes a strikingly Sith-looking red lightsaber. Further details have not yet emerged, so we don't even know what this character looks like, but it stands to reason that he is most likely not human.
Here's that first teaser trailer with Serkis' voiceover, if you need a refresher:

Simon Pegg has tweeted a message that apparently leaks Daniel Craig's secret role in the new Star Wars movie.

James Bond actor Daniel Craig has long been rumored to have a cameo appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but fellow actor Simon Pegg has apparently outed the current 007 star as a Stormtrooper while being quizzed on his own involvment in the movie.
Pegg quickly followed up his comment by saying "I shouldn't have said that". If true, fans may have trouble spotting Craig in the movie as he will be amongst the ranks of identically-clad Stormtroopers of the First Order.
Of course, it's entirely possible (and likely) that his comment was merely a joke, as it has not been officially confirmed.

Visceral Games have dropped a number of hints regarding their upcoming contribution to Star Wars gaming, including a mention of Han Solo.

It has long been known that Visceral Games, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts has been working on a Star Wars project, but up until now nothing has been mentioned about what type of game they are developing.
Visceral are perhaps most well known for their science fiction survival horror series Dead Space, and more recently Battlefield Hardline; a game that unlike previous other Battlefield games revolves around crime and policing rather than warfare.
Staff members from the studio took to Twitter to drop hints about the upcoming game, including Scott Warner, the game's director, who posted a pirate-like flag with a stormtrooper helmet and crossbones accompanied by the words "It's better to be a pirate than to join the navy."
Other hints dropped by staff members include more pirate references and a new decoration for their office in the form of a life-size statue of Han Solo frozen in carbonite.

Carrie Fisher's daughter has killed the The Force Awakens rumor involving a flashback scene of Leia.

Billy Lourd has revealed during an interview with ET Online that her appearance in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is not as a young Princess Leia in a flashback scene as has been previously rumored, a news snippet that has since been repeated by Carrie Fisher herself.
During the interview, which was to promote new television show Scream Queens, Lourd stated that although the rumors were false she is still involved in the movie. This may mean that her appearance in The Force Awakens is a much more minor role than thought, as she declined to give further details on her character.

Joss Whedon is rumored to be in talks with Lucasfilm to sign on for a Star Wars project.

The second Star Wars Anthology film ran into trouble recently when director Josh Trank stepped down from the project. Some reports say Trank was fired from the film after disagreements with the other key production crew members. In either case Lucasfilm are on the lookout for a replacement, and the latest rumors from Latino Review indicate that they may be looking to Avengers: Age of Ultron director Joss Whedon to fill that spot.
He has already expressed a desire to move on from the Marvel universe, after helming both Avengers movies and writing for Marvel's Agents of  SHIELD television series, and perhaps Disney aren't ready to let him go just yet. Another possibility is the fabled Star Wars live-action television series which has been in development limbo for a decade but occasionally pops up in a rumor, and he is no stranger to science-fiction or fantasy on TV, having created cult classics Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly, and Dollhouse.
No official source has yet commented on these rumors as usual, so little may come of them, but even the possibility of Joss Whedon joining Star Wars is sure to excite fans.
