Star Wars News & Features

News and information from a Galaxy Far Far Away, and sometimes a little closer to home.

Star Wars has been confirmed as the latest franchise to join Disney Infinity, the best-selling hybrid toy and video game series.

Disney Infinity 3.0 Edition will add Star Wars favourites to the Infinity line-up, alongside Disney, Marvel, and Pixar characters that have already joined the video game series, with James Pitario, president of Disney Interactive saying the team have, "worked closely with Lucasfilm to deliver an authentic Star Wars game experience, featuring some of the most iconic stories and characters from the past, present and future."
Star Wars will debut on the platform with three playsets, one based on the prequel trilogy timeline, one based on the classic trilogy timeline, and the third to be released later this year based on The Force Awakens.
The announcement came shortly after leaked images appeared to show Star Wars characters alongside the familiar Disney Infinity branded packaging, and an official trailer has since been released:

Disney Infinity 3.0 is being developed for PlayStation4, PlayStation3, Xbox One, Xbox 360, Wii U, PC, iOS and Android.

Josh Trank has left the second Star Wars anthology film it has been reported, ending weeks of rumors after his absence from Star Wars Celebration last month. The director, who has directed the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, and is perhaps best known for the found-footage superpower drama Chronicle, was announced as director of the second spin-off movie last year.
It had been rumored that disagreements between Trank and the production team had become evident, and although he was due to appear alongside Gareth Edwards during the Rogue One panel at Celebration it was announced at the start of the panel that he would not be attending.
In a statement, Trank said "After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I'm making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I've put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities."
However, according the Hollywood Reporter, the director was fired from the project.
The spin-off movies were announced to be called "anthology films" at Celebration, and Josh Trank's film was to be the second in the series, to be released in 2018 between Star Wars Episode VIII and XI. No cast or has yet been announced for the film, but suggested storylines were rumored to revolve around Boba Fett or a young Han Solo.
A pair of Star Wars fans from the UK have sent a model X-wing into space, in the hopes of securing tickets to the premiere of The Force Awakens.

The duo are an Essex group that use weather balloons to take photographs of the Earth from space, and to get the production teams attention they attached a model X-wing to one of their balloons and send it to the edge of space at a cost of around £1,200. They recorded the video and tweeted director JJ Abrams their plea for tickets.

Thank the maker! Star Wars creator George Lucas has submitted plans to build a brand new affordable housing complex in the wealthy Lucas Valley area of California.

As far back as 1988, George Lucas has sought planning approval for redevelopment of Grady Ranch at 2400 Lucas Valley Road in Marin County, California, near his most well known property, Skywalker Ranch. These proposals have included a plan for construction of a digital production center for Lucasfilm in 2012, and was heavily protested by other residents of the area.

Last week, Lucas struck back with a new proposal for a 224-unit affordable housing complex on the site, apparently footing the $150-million bill himself. The complex is said to consist of a mixture of residences along with a pool and community center.

The proposals have been met with backlash from residents of the area, concerned that crime rates will rise and property values will fall. According to his lawyer, Lucas has commented on the project which would take placer in an area with an average household income of over $90k as saying, "We've got enough millionaires here. What we need is some houses for regular working people."

This continues Lucas' trend of philanthropic gestures, following on from the $4-billion pledge to education from the proceeds of the sale of Lucasfilm, the formation of the educational foundation, Edutopia, and his Giving Pledge to will half of his fortune to charity.

Celebration Anaheim attendees were treated to a special teaser of upcoming spin-off Star Wars: Rogue One this weekend.

Speaking at Celebration Kathleen Kennedy and director Gareth Edwards revealed new information about the upcoming spin-off, which has only one cast member confirmed so far - Felicity Jones, who will allegedly play a Rebel soldier.

Those attending the panel were also treated to a special teaser trailer which has leaked online, which confirms the setting as being pre-A New Hope, with a plot revolving around Rebel Alliance forces retrieving the plans for the first dreaded Death Star. The teaser trailer is at this stage more of a concept reveal, as the film has not yet started shooting, but is certain to whet the appetites of eager fans.

Edwards also stated to fans that "the absence of the Jedi is omnipresent in the film. It hangs over the whole movie", and further elaborated that the difference between the good guys and the bad guys may not be so clear cut.

The spin-off movies will be known as 'Anthology' films and will be stand alone features that form part of the official canon but do not rely on the core characters of the main Star Wars saga.

Rogue One is currently scheduled for release on 16 December 2016.

    Star Wars Rebels season two

    By Andy, in Television,

An extended trailer for the second season of Star Wars Rebels was revealed at Star Wars Celebration this Saturday.

The animated show on Disney XD has proved itself with the first season, and producers have said that season two has almost twice as many episodes as the first. The first episode of season two, titled The Siege of Lothal, was also screened at the Star Wars Celebration Anaheim fan event on Saturday.

The new trailer for The Force Awakens is out, and we've been watching on repeat, but have we really fully digested the new information? Here we take a closer look at the second trailer and point out a few things we've spotted. I'm sure it goes without saying that this article contains spoilers!

The trailer opens with a vehicle racing across desert scene, could this be the speeder we saw Rey (Daisy Ridley) driving in the first trailer? Apparently the desert planet is not Tatooine, as previously speculated, but is instead a new planet known as Jakku.

0:30 - The vehicle passes a Star Destroyer and a crashed Rebellion-era X-wing (note the classic trilogy style engines on the wings). They seem to have been there for quite a while, judging by the general decay and amount of sand that has gathered around the larger starship.

A voiceover, which sounds a lot like Mark Hamill reciting a version of his talk with Leia from Return of the Jedi, says "The Force is strong in my family." If you listen carefully there is a creepy Sith-like whispering echo repeating the words.

0:35 - "My father has it." Darth Vader's melted helmet rests on a plinth; clearly somebody has this on display.

0:45 - "I have it." A cloaked figure sits at a campfire and rests a cybernetic hand on R2-D2: Is this Luke Skywalker himself?

0:52 - "My sister has it." We see a very familiar looking lightsaber being handed to female character by an unidentified alien. The lightsaber appears to be the lightsaber once owned by Anakin Skywalker, which was passed by Obi-Wan Kenobi to Luke in A New Hope. The lightsaber was lost after Luke's duel with Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and has seemingly resurfaced.

The hand looks too young to be Leia, but it was rumoured previously that Carrie Fisher's daughter, Billy Lourde, had been cast to portray Leia in a flashback scene. If so, this could be it. Pay attention to the background, as there seems to be an audience.

The trailer fades to black and the voiceover finishes with "You have that power too." Given the preceding speech about family, we could surmise that he is referring to one of the newer cast members, who may be a descendant of one of the Skywalker twins.

1:05 - Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and his T-70 X-wing squadron skim across a body of water surrounded by forest. We see Poe inside the cockpit, interestingly his helmet bears the insignia of the Rebel Alliance.

1:08 - A brief flash of Kylo Ren slashing his infamous cross-guard lightsaber. A stormtrooper is lurking in the background.

1:09 - Rey and Finn (John Boyega) flee as a TIE fighter pursues them, while BB-88 wheels along behind them.

1:10 - Kylo Ren shows his face again, or not; he is sporting a metallic mask and appears to be involved in a battle of sorts. Stormtroopers in the background appear to be holding civilians while multiple fires burn around them.

1:12 - Stormtroopers assemble outside some kind of base. A large banner with a new logo reminiscent of the Imperial insignia adorns the building, which seems to be heavily armed with turbolasers similar to those seen on the exterior of the Death Star. An updated TIE fighter can be seen clearly to right of the picture. Some important people appear to be on the balcony above them; a new Imperial leader, perhaps?

1:15 - Somebody seems to be making a getaway in a TIE fighter while the garrison tries to stop them. As we have seen Finn in a stormtrooper uniform, and removing his helmet in the previous trailer, could this be how he ends up on Jakku with Rey?

1:19 - A new model of Star Destroyer makes an appearance, as we see several shuttle-like craft approach.

1:20 - A chrome plated stormtrooper walks a corridor in what is clearly an Imperial facility, although the rocky wall suggests it may be an underground base rather than a space station. The character is rumoured to be played by Gwendolin Christie and known as Captain Phasma.

1:21 - Various character shots, including BB-8 peeking around the corner on board the Millennium Falcon and Rey giving Finn a helping hand.

1:25 - The Falcon appears, sporting it's updated squared communications array, and unsurprisingly behind chased by a TIE fighter. Some things never change. In a classic Han Solo move, it dives down inside a crashed starship, which judging by the array of engines visible may be an upside-down Super Star Destroyer. Like the previously seen Star Destroyer wreck, it appears to have been there a while.

1:28 - In case you were wondering what an updated TIE pilot looks like, here you go! Apparently the Empire only has one colour of LED for the internal displays.

1:34 - "Chewie... We're home." In an obvious nod to the original 1977 Star Wars promotional stills, Han Solo and Chewbacca strike a pose. Han seems to have gained a few more greys than his copilot.
