The Final Mission: Spooky 8

A+

I wouldn't exactly call it entertaining, but it is quite a good book. The reason I wouldn't call it entertaining is because that's not the purpose of this book. It's a non fiction book, written by Bob King, the commander of Spooky 8. Of course, it's all about political conspiracies, so whether it's really non fiction is debatable. It's written in a way that makes it seem quite truthful, so I'm going to go out a limb here and believe the story, but with sketptiscism.

The men of Spooky 8 live double lives. On one hand, they are normal civillians, trying to make it through each day as your or I would. On the other hand, they are one of the military's best kept secrets, a fighting force that carries out the missions the U.S. military doesn't want to get involved in. They're basically mercenaries, but with complete allegiance to the U.S. They take can decline any mission that comes their way. But the money's good, so they don't exactly decline too often.

Spooky 8 is asked to do an "easy breather" mission, set up some sensor instruments near an airfield believed to be used by Colombian drug dealers. They all have a bad feeling about the mission, but the 10,000 dollars each of them recieves for the mission easily outweighs their unease. They're almost done with the mission when they're ambushed. At the end of the ambush, 3 out of the 8 members of Spooky 8 lay dead. The remaining members realize that they've been set up. That this whole mission had only purpose: Spooky 8 had been sent to this mission to die.

Now, with their own country as their enemy, Spooky 8 will have to escape Colombia, make it back to the U.S., find out what the hell is going on, and stop the government from trying to finish the job.

I've just got a couple of comments:

1. This isn't a book saying that the U.S. is a corrupt power, trying to exploit it's own soldiers or anything like that, in the end, we find out that it's a bunch of dirtbags in the Intelligence Community.

2. It's pretty hard to tell if this is true or not. There does seem to be some very fortunate coincidences for King and his unit, there arn't enough coincidences to make the book entirely unbelievable, but does make you think. Then again, the way it's written makes it seem very hard to have been fabricated

3. As a non fiction book, it is very good. As a fiction book, it is quite enjoyable. You have to make the choice of which it is for yourself.

Near the end it sounds a bit fiction...maybe it was based on a true story though.

KillZone: A

I tried out this game earlier today. It's an awesome shooter as far as I could tell. The AI isn't unbearably idiotic. The weaponry is destructive and the damage is realistic. I must confess I have no idea how the plot unfolds. But so far, the multiplayer is fantastic and fun. Online should be just as good especially with the capabilities of a headset. Supposedly this game is a disappointment. I think it's one of the Top 10 shooting games of the last 4 years. Feel free to dissect my opinion and splatter its remains all over the wall.

My sources tell me the frame-rate was unbearable when things got messy.

Fruits Basket:

i LOVE this series. it's about this family with a curse that transforms them into the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiak if they get hugged by a member of the opposite sex or get really stressed. the cat and the rat fight all the time and the dog's a bit of a perv, but the show's utterly hilarious. A+++++++++

DNAngel:

another anime series like Fruits Basket. a 14 year old kid turns into an infamous art thief whenever he feels intense love for the girl he likes. the coversations between Daisuke and Dark are great since they argue in each other's head. A++++++++++

Anime in America is the thing to watch. Very few kids watch anything else. You see them getting engrossed in Toonami. And not paying very much attention to anything else. I like anime, but I like a lot of other genres as well. It seems that anime is the new thing here and unfortunately, the new thing lasts for less than two years on average.

I don't mind the Japanese versions as long as I can figure out what the characters are saying. It's bad enough when I can't read half the signs lol.

Yes the English dubbings are horrible. I saw one anime once. The line was finished and the character's mouth moved for another minute. It was atrocious.

Or in one anime a tournament called "Tenka-Ichi Budokai". Translated to World Martial Arts Tournament. Now that's a mouthful.

Constantine = A

Saw this movie earlier tonight. It was a very good movie. Keanu pulled off the role of John Constantine...an emotionless, expressionless, film noir, saviour-type...perfectly (I wonder why, lol). Anyway, the story was good...based on a comic series of the same name from Dark Horse. Basically it's about Constantine who fights demons in order to try and buy his way into Heaven...but he's not allowed through the pearly gates since he committed suicide as a teen and, even though he was revived after 2 minutes, the holy rules say that anyone who commits suicide is denied entry to Heaven. So now John teams up with some other chick...Angela or something...and they have to stop a crazy angel and some Mexican guy from bringing the son of Satan into the world using the Spear of Destiny....which was supposedly the spear that killed Christ (even though it technically didn't kill Him...it was used on Him after He was dead...). Despite inaccuracies like that, I still enjoyed the story and the concept behind it. Now, two of my favorite scenes are when Constantine:

1) beats up a half-breed demon with some holy gold knuckles; and

2) shoots up a room full of half-breeds with a shotgun loaded with "blessed bullets" :p

There were a number of funny parts tossed in, which were good. I especially liked the very end of the movie...a nice little joke there, lol. I won't tell you what it is...you'll just have to see it yourself. ;)
