Unknown Status

Rian Johnson Star Wars Trilogy

Shortly before the release of The Last Jedi it was announced that director Rian Johnson would be working on a new trilogy of Star Wars films that were separate from the main episodic saga. It is speculated that this will pick up on some of the themes introduced in The Last Jedi and follow a new group of young Force users.

Cancelled Projects

2020 Star Wars Story

This spin-off film was previously assigned to Josh Trank to direct, before he was dropped from the project, which was rumoured to be based on the story of fan-favourite bounty hunter Boba Fett. Other rumours favoured an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off, which Ewan McGregor stated he would be happy to reprise his role for. It was reported in October 2018 that the Boba Fett film had been scrapped in favour of the the Jon Favreau television series, The Mandalorian, and the relatively poor box office performance of Solo: A Star Wars Story caused Disney/Lucasfilm to reevaluate their future release plans.

Released Projects

2015 - Star Wars: The Force Awakens

2016 - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

2017 - Star Wars: The Last Jedi

2018 - Solo: A Star Wars Story

    • Star Wars 2022

The release date was announced by Disney in May 2019.
Disney CEO Bob Iger confirmed on 14 May 2019 that this movie would be the first film from David Benioff and DB Weiss, the creators of the Game of Thrones TV adaptation, but on 28 October the pair stepped away from the project citing scheduling conflicts due to a deal with Netflix.
    • David Benioff and DB Weiss leave Star Wars project

The creative duo behind the hit TV show Game of Thrones have reportedly stepped away from Star Wars, according to a report by Deadline.
David Benioff and DB Weiss joined the Star Wars family with much fanfare earlier this year, to head up a new series of films starting in 2022. Rumours had circulated that the film was to be based in the Old Republic era, possibly an adaptation of the beloved Knights of the Old Republic RPG games.
The pair have cited their reason for leaving the project as being due to commitments with their recent $200 million Netflix deal which would require attention that they felt would not leave them able to focus fully on Star Wars.
In response to the news Kathleen Kennedy has left the door open for their return in the future, but despite this apparent setback there is no shortage of other Star Wars projects in the works; with Kevin Feige becoming involved recently and the Rian Johnson trilogy not completely off the cards (yet). There are also TV projects in the works, such as the Obi-Wan Kenobi series, Cassian Andor series, and of course The Mandalorian which launches with Disney+ on 12 November, and video game Jedi: Fallen Order also releasing in November.
    • Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is the final episode of the Star Wars sequel trilogy, and will also mark the end of the entire Skywalker Saga.
It was originally slated to be directed by Colin Trevorrow, until he left the project in September 2017. JJ Abrams then returned to helm the film, and close off the trilogy he launched with The Force Awakens.
The title and teaser trailer were revealed at Star Wars Celebration Chicago in April 2019.
Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is set for release on 20 December 2019.
