True. However, your earlier statement that the USSR wasn't a superpower post-Stalin is still incorrect as the power built up during his rule carried on for decades to follow.

Please their navy was not rivalling the US. they said they had more then they really did. They had subs and missles built of cardboard and we knew this their governmet knew this but were telling their people and everyone else that it was all real. You can't win with fake wepons when we know that they are fake. The only thing they really had going for them was their attitude. Sure they had nukes but no reliable way to get them over here with any accuracy until Cuba but they backed down. they didn't even admit that chernybol had melted down till a sweedish nuclear power plant was getting abnormally high rad readings and discovered it was the prevailing winds carring to them from Russia. Again attitude and lies.

Riiiiiight.

I would imagine both sides lied to make it look like they had the bigger balls.

And they backed out of Cuba due to the threat of mutual annihilation. Neither side really wanted to blow the world to hell...it was just one giant game of Chicken.

That's basically the ENTIRE Cold War.

I'd listen to Marius on this one. Members of his immediate family are.... shall we say... uncommonly knowledgable on the Cold War and the Soviet Union (no he's not Russian).

THis'll be more interesting than... well, most stuff in my life. But I have to side with Marius. After Stalin, they kinda lost their steam...

Tut tut. You think I would let this discussion get out of control? No faith in her fellow GB staff. For shame! :p

That was my point. ;)

CIA? FBI? Naval Intel?

All I'm saying is that humans lie by nature. In a war, it would be stupid to think that your government isn't lying (to the enemy AND to its own population) about some things. Creating a confident nation to back the government is hugely important to successfully winning a war.

We all know that Russians are nothing but liers... but we won't demand proof that they're destroying their weapons because they're still a political power, and coming around thanks to the leadership of Comrade Putin.

Regarding the US losing is superpower status someday... Remember that capitalism relies on an ever-increasing market to enable it's economy to stay strong. This world is FINITE, whereas capitalism demands an INFINITE progression. Therefore it is inherently doomed to fail at some point.

I dunno... I think "democratic communism" could work... at least better than the current system. Hmm.

We all know that Russians are nothing but liers...

I'm pretty sure that's a gross generalization. I would imagine that there are Russians who would say the same thing about the USA.

Another generalization that one could make is that all Americans/Russians are totally biased on this topic. Take it from those of us living in other countries, the US is not infallible.

As far as the ever increasing market to enable the market, there is a cycle. We live in a disposable society you get a new cellphone every year, new hvac avery 12 years (depending on location) new car after 100k miles. As the products are bought and sold the money is dispersed and trickle down and around the population is increasing so there will be more need for goods and services thus more jobs aviable untilwe reach the point of maximum capicity. Then the needs will change thus the market will change. It's that that it's a ever expanding but ever changing. The russians didn't change they still had the ruler out to measure when the markets changed, and they didn't. They stayed focused on the global milatary domanance when the cash well dried up wereas the US kept an eye on it, but focused on the global industral and technolgical growth. Thats when it took off the space shuttle from nasa had less technology then a ti caculator in the early 90s. After the colapse and they opened the doors the russians loved american products so much so a used car salesman went over to siberia and opened a ny style pizzeria and from that one restraunt he now has about 30 restaurants across the country. He has changed Novosibirsk, a thriving IT industry to have a leisure class with disposable income.

Both capitalism and communism sound awesome on paper but neither really delivers.

Exactly!

I wondered the other day if it was possible to mix the two together... lol.

What would you get... capunism or commitalism? lol

No, you can't mix them; they're completely dichotomous. However, you can find a middle ground: socialism.

True, however, I'll take the problems of socialism over the problems of pure capitalism or communism.
