This is not good. Not good at ALL. My shiny new degree is going to be worthless if these reactors keep shutting down because my field will be crippled. No reactor = no generators = no technitium = no scans = no Nuclear Medicine. :mad:

Whoa, that's crazy. Why does that one reactor supply so much of the isotopes needed for medical imaging? Can't any facility supply them?

unfortunately, no. there are only a handful of reactors (for some reason i want to say 8, but don't quote me on it) that have the capacity to produce medical grade molybdenum. and if i remember correctly, only half of those 8 are operational.

moly is a byproduct of a very specific fission reaction of uranium. the problem is that the reactors that are producing moly generators are very old and falling apart. yet, the public is so terrified of radiation and that someone is going to drop a bomb on them, that no one is willing to build new reactors. and the state of the econamy is not helping. the thing is, with today's technology and safety standards, a new reactor would be much safer (and probably more cost-efficient) than continuing to patch up the old reactors. not to mention it could be a fantastic source of green energy. particularly if it can be worked out so that the creation of energy also creates medical isotopes. see? everybody wins.

the one glimmer of hope is University of St Louis. they have a reactor there and we are praying they start producing medical isotopes.

and while i'm ranting, i need to call the birdy vet again. i've been noticing clumps of food in the bottom of Oscar's cage, which means he's either throwing them up or he's not digesting them properly. :wail:

Very true. I know that Westinghouse is building many new reactors around the world. You would think that they would be able to take care of this shortage, especially for something so important to the medical industry.

And I hope the birdie is ok!!

thanks. i'm rather irritated with my parents for never taking him in for a checkup when we bought him. i know our first bird cost them a small fortune when she got sick, but good grief. we'd had him 5 years before i got married and took him with me. more than enough time to at least get bloodwork done.

i'm also thinking about getting him a friend so he won't be so lonely when i'm not home, so i want to make sure he doesn't have anything that could be passed on to the other bird.

I don't really know about birds, but antibiotics definitely can upset the human digestive tract and cause diarrhea and vomiting. Hopefully that's all it is!

good news! birdy seems to be ok. still needs to gain some weight, though. 77g is a bit skinny. the vet was so funny when i asked her how i could get his weight up a little since he won't touch people food. she screwed up her face and said, "I hate to say it, but sunflower seeds." :lol:
