Advertising Feedback

To help support the running costs of Galactic Basic, banner advertisments provided by Google have been added to some parts of the forums, along with affiliate links inserted be VigLink.

We hope they are not obtrusive or inappropriate, but if you have any feedback regarding the content, placement or style of these advertisements please leave your feedback in this thread.

Just wondering...I see the solid color ads are red, can they be changed to blue at all?

They can be changed, I'll see what I can do - don't want them to blend in too much in case they look like part of the site and get clicked by accident. :)

Is there any way to control the content of the ads?  If so, what about making them more in-line with the site's content as opposed random crap like ads for BP.  As fa as ad placement, my only problem is when they are just after the first post.

I'm not sure how much control I have over the content of the ads, I deliberately made the flad after the first post the smallest one possible to have.

Google ads are supposed to bear the page content in mind, but it's not too accurate on forums due to the mixed nature ofthe content. They can also use your previous searches if you're logged in to Google.

I've enabled VigLink, a revenue earning service that inserts relevant links into posts to enable the site to generate income.

It's had generally better reviews than similar services but if it proves to be too much of a nuisance I will disable it.

II've seen those too, along with dark horse comics ads, seems like it's getting better at giving us relevant ads. :)

    • Galactic Basic and the Aurebesh

In a universe where a civilisation can span a galaxy, there needs to be a way to communicate clearly with friends (and enemies) across the stars. In the Star Wars universe this language is Galactic Basic, also known as Galactic Standard or simply 'Basic', which has it's own alphabet known as Aurebesh.
Basic is spoken across the galaxy and was the primary langauge of the old Republic and the Galactic Empire, although it is not the only common language; some factions have their own official languages, such as Huttese which is used by the Hutts and is common within their territories. Wookiees, among other species, are unable to speak Basic due to their differing physiology but can still learn to understand it.
You may have spotted some instances of the Aurebesh in the movies and other media and a lot of them, especially in newer media, can be translated. Luckily, the glyphs used in the aurebesh transliterate easily into English, as you can see in the images below.

    • Galactic Basic's birthday!

Happy birthday GB! Happy birthday GB... etc etc
    • .com domain expiry

Currently, Galactic Basic can be accessed via .net or .com domain names. During March 2014 GalacticBasic.com will be expiring due to lack of funding, therefore GalacticBasic.net will then be the only way to visit GB.

If anybody currently uses the .com domain, we recommend you update your bookmarks as soon as possible to avoid inconvenience.

Also, as hosting is also due to expire soon we still require donations as we are only halfway to meeting the funding target to renew hosting. We will post further details of this soon.
    • Galactic Basics - A basic guide to the Star Wars universe

A new feature I would like to get going for GB is a series of basic guides to the Star Wars universe.

With a new trilogy on the way, there are likely to be new fans looking for an insight to Star Wars that they might not be able to glean simply by watching the films.

The first guide I'd like to write is about the Force, and give examples of dark and light powers, quotes from characters an other useful tidbits people might find good to know.

I have a few ideas already but if yo u think of anything that should be included, or ideas for other guides please leave your suggestions below!
