For a HS diploma, all you have to do is meet the standards set by your school district. Each district is different, but pretty much, you can't miserably fail every class

It depends on the state and school district. To get my high school diploma, I had to pass at least 28 classes, including two foreign language, four language arts, four math, four science, and four social sciences and pass five tests on writing, language arts, social sciences, math, and sciece.

It also depends on the diploma you're seeking. If you're planning to go straight to work or to school to be something like an electrician, you go for a Vocational/Technical Diploma. If you're planning to go to college, you go for a College Prep Diploma, which is what I got.

The GED is standardized. 5 exams; Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading and Writing (which includes a written essay).

Well Unknown's system is a little more confusing then the rest. In my school district you have to complete so many classes in certain areas and as long as you complete all of your classes successfully, then you get your diploma and everyone gets the same diploma

in my school, even if you didn't meet all the requirements, all you had to do was sweet talk the principal or vice, or have you parents do that, and you graduated!! Yay, that makes my succesful completion of high school all that sweeter!! Seriously though it was crap like that that make high school completely pointless in my mind. That and having an AP Calc class, that rather than preparing us so we could pass the AP exam and skip our first semester of college math, we spent entire weeks on a single section and only got through 3 and a half of the 14 chapters of the book. Absolutely ridiculous. And what is up with the special ed and resource room kids getting the same diploma? Granted I feel sympathy for those who were born horrible problems, but when they can't even speak or produce a coherent thought, yet get the same diploma as me ... and probably A's on their transcript too! Is that really the fairness they seek? Or resource room students, they never have to do homework, the aids get the answer keys for the assignments, quizzes and tests for them. And then the kids get A's and graduate, without ever having to learn or lift a finger or crack a book.

Yeah I'm bitter.

yeah, I guess your right. I'm not some angry person, I usually never show anger in public, I just am a little disgruntled sometimes when I actually think about how easy some people get the ride. But then I realize how my work will eventually pay off, so I keep plugging it out.

On the comment about parents having their day of joy ... there was a girl in my class who only had about half the credits needed to graduate, and surprisingly enough they didn't give her a diploma, but she got to go through the graduation ceremonies with everyone else in my class.

Now isn't that the "Most Ridiculous Item of the Day"?

Have you ever thought that for the mentally challenged, that the work that they do is just as hard to them as the work you do is to you?

I meant the resource room kids in that quote. In my school resource room kids were the delinquents who usually dropped out or kids that would just refuse to do school work in other normal classes. They got put in a special room where they'd sit around watching TV and movies and having aides do their homework. This is not an exaggeration either, my dad taught at the same high school I attented and would confirm all my suspiscions.

My only two dissagreements I have with the way that the handicapped are educated, is that they recieve the identical diploma that I did. It should be different in my mind. and the second, an extreme example: There was a kid in our school who was a complete vegetable, he'd been in our high school for some six years. There were two full time aides making $25,000 a piece per year to walk this kid a round and change his diapers. Not to mention the cost of other equipment and accomodations. This one kid took an estimated $60,000 a year from the rest of the students who would've benefitted from extra educational budget, like maybe an advanced math teacher or more classrooms to accomodate the 250 students more that our school could handle. To me, and others I've talked to, our school was providing nothing more than a babysitting service for the family of this kid, that's not a school's responsibility.

On a side note, the kid's brother was in my speech class, and gave a speech on how the situation was inappropriate. He tried to talk his parents into pulling the kid out of the school.

I'll try to avoid turning this into a debate :p

Well, my dad works in education, and law mandates that *all* children are to be educated. The law doesn't differetiate between those who are super geniouses, normal kids, or those who are "veggies" as you put it.

Not saying it's right...it's just the law.

yeah I know, it's just that he's been in high school for 6 years now ... how long do they keep taking care of him. Some laws make sense on paper, but loopholes are so disastrously prevalent.

And I didn't mean vegetable in an offensive way at all, just to clarify so I don't get jumped again.

In the state of Ohio, you have the right to be educated until you reach the age of....21 or 22. I forget. Unless you dropped out or graduated, of course. Dunno about other states.

Why do I get the feeling that you just love to stir up trouble when it comes to issues of political correctness? I think you know very well what he meant.

That has nothing to do with political correctness, really. It's a valid point.

Okay, I got my eye on this thread now. If you get the urge to flame someone, try to control yourself and don't, please. I know you haven't yet, but most debates on GB end up that way.

Thanks.

Yes, but.. They shouldn't be given help in their class work if they're trying to get the same diploma. Where's the fairness in that?

if yousay so... I'd disagree, and go with what Bushy said.

I was just bringing up a point because of some of my own personal experiences, not to be uberpolitically correct

Well, in any case, their high school diploma might look the same, but it doesn't mean the same thing. So really it's not equal.

Ok... So I've never held a "real" job in my life before. Sure, I've been paid on a regular basis to do odd jobs for certain people, and I even got paid 5 bucks a game to keep score for a church basketball league for 5 years straight. But that was still only $10 a week. So... I've finally found myself a job. A friend of mine works at an italian restaurant, and he got me in working as a driver, making deliveries. Mind you I haven't started yet, but I've had a few talks with the boss and things are looking promising. I'd be getting a base pay of $6 an hour, plus $1 for every delivery I make, plus tips (and people usually tip delivery boys good :)). The boss is a great guy too. I live 15 minutes away, but I know the area pretty well, since my buddy lives there and I hang out with him and his brother all the time. But the boss is willing to take me around town in his car for a few days before he hires me to see how well I know the area, and to help familiarize me with it. The only "hitch" is that I get paid "under the table". I'm fine with that, and my mom is fine with it if I am. But no. My dad isn't. While I was away with my friends helping someone move, my dad went off on my mom, saying that if I get in an accident while making deliveries, the insurance company won't pay for any of it because I wouldn't be getting paid the regular way. That doesn't make any sense at all to me, because if it's off the record, then it shouldn't make a difference. But no. He yells at my mom, then takes a nap. And he's in one of his "moods" again. So I'm pissed at him and don't want to talk to him, even though I have to. I also have to go and talk to the boss tomorrow and ask him what can be done about the payment issue. I found this out an hour ago, when I brought a friend back with me from moving. I was supposed to take him to work, but we were early, so I brought him back to my house and we were going to take my bimmer for a spin, since it hadn't been driven in about a month. Well, I get a call from my mom while I'm on the road, and she says that she's not sure if the car is even insured or not. BOI-OI-OI-OING!! I've about had it with insurance companies. F' em all I say. The world would be a better place without insurance. Especially for good drivers like me and my parents, who fork over thousands a year and we haven't ever been in an accident. It's stupid. And that's another thing. I've never gotten pulled over, or hit another car. And my dad says he trusts me. If he trusts me so much, why can't he just let me make my own decissions when it comes to my first job, that I found on my own? Yeah, the insurance is under his name, but he knows I'm a good driver and even said so himself numerous times. It's just rediculous is what it is... I'm almost 18, jesus. I'll be picking up my insurance payments on my car in 4 months. Can't he just let me do this? Apparently not... And the thing is, I start up school in the fall, and I'll be needing an evening job, and this is perfect. I need to start paying off that student loan as soon a possible, and be able to pay for gas (it's a 45-50 mile commute each way to the school), and insurance. And coffee. Bah. Does he want me to have a job or not? My family always makes fun of me for not having a job yet (all in fun of course), but when I finally do get one, my dad squashes it cause he's so f'ing paranoid. He's so paranoid, that he thinks Adaware is a virus and won't let me run it on my mom's PC. Gah, I am so pissed right now.

I'll be over there brooding if anyone needs me...
