SoftballJedi 0 Posted August 4, 2006 Ehh, to me, that was a big enough twist. But if you think about it, they're all little twists into one big twist. Like Donna marrying the Speedo-wearing guy Sean Astin played. Bill? It just seemed like a modern Christmas Carol. What's wrong with the name Morty? Mort is French for death. Ohhh...that's makes sense now
Bad furday 57 Posted August 12, 2006 Strangers in Paradise by Terry Moore Grade A Well, I've just finished reading Strangers in Paradise - Pocket Book 1 (containing Volume 1 issues 1-3 and Volume 2 issues 1-13), and all I can say is, "More, please!" Brief and not as good as the back cover synopsis: Katchoo ( Katina Choovansky) is a stubborn and independant young woman who finally has her life where she wants it, living an anonymous life with her best friend/girlfriend Francine. When David, an art student at NYU enters the picture, a love triangle of sorts forms, adding humor to the more serious tone of the story. Apparently, Katchoo has a past she's kept hidden from her best friend that involves domestic violence, call girls, and the main point, stealing $850,000 in mob money. Katchoo's former employers (a rather violent group of call girls that are the aforementioned mob) will do anything to obtain the money. This of course puts Katchoo's friends in great danger. Add to this the constant annoyance of Freddy Femur, Francine's cheating as well as jilted lover, and there are enough plot lines to allow your interests to wander. This is my first foray into the world of graphic novels, and I'm quite impressed. Moore's illustration style is crisp, eye catching, and different. The characters are not drawn in the style that many manga novels have. This is a more realistic style, with exaggerations thrown in when needed be ( Think Cowboy Bebop meets American Splendor) The attention to detail, especially in the characters' subtle movements, makes them seem more real than just ink on a page. The facial expressions instantly convey the mood the first time one sees the characters. The way that the story is written and illustrated makes me actually care what happens to Katchoo, Francine, and David. (ie: I DO want Francine to leave that jerk; I DON'T want Katchoo to go through more pain, I DO want to see Freddy Femur meet a timely demise! ) This is a very fast read. The combination of fast flowing plots and storyboards, with illustrations moves the story along in ways that ordinary text has a hard time trying to convey. This story tackles the good, the ugly, the utterly illogical way that relationships affect ourselves and those who are in the relationship with us. Emotionally, this book swings between absolutely hilarious to realistically sad. It's a good mix, with various character flashbacks thrown in to explain current events ( and keep the reader on their toes). Within the first few minutes of picking up the book at Borders, I was hooked. Put down the book, this one could not. The nice thing about the Pocket Book is that it condenses the issues into one book, thereby saving space on your bookshelf. Unless of course, the individual stories have covers that you really really like the artwork on ( raises hand) and you would like to have one or two just for that reason. At the moment, there are 5 Pocket Books in all, with a 6th probably on the way. I say 6th because the final issue (#90) will hit the shelves May 2007, and Pocket Book 5 goes up to issue #76. I genuinely pleased to have discovered this new world, and eagerly want to dive back in!
Andy 60 Posted August 15, 2006 Criminals target online RPGs http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4794139.stm The police are really good at understanding someone stole my credit card and ran up a lot of money. It's a lot harder to get them to buy into 'someone stole my magic sword' *giggle*

Alexander 0 Posted August 19, 2006 (edited) Snakes on a Plane: Well there's only one thing this movie can be rated as, given as what it is a homage to. Grade: B-Horror Movie. It was a drug overdose of lame, but like all drugs, the sense of euphoria that preceded your realization that the movie was terrible was one that could leave you in stitches; not to mention Samuel L. Jackson's infamous line was well-received by the audience. It is a movie, that if you have to see it, see it with an audience. Brumak 2 Posted August 22, 2006 What surprised me most when I saw the trailer for that...They actually got a good actor to play in what seemed to be a cheesy horror-thriller full of annoying yet 'heh-heh' humor...
Alexander 0 Posted August 22, 2006 Well Jackson agreed to do it just based on the title.

Andy 60 Posted August 23, 2006 I think Jackson is the kind of actor who likes to do different things. So he prolly thought "Snakes on a Plane? Looks like a laugh" But I dunno. :p
Brumak 2 Posted August 23, 2006 Dead Rising: XBox 360 Who wouldn't want to walk around a mall infested with hordes of zombies, smashing serv-bot heads over zombies, taking pictures of the massacre, and picking up pretyy much anything else? (picking up a gumball machine to use as a gigantic blugeon is pretty damn satisfying...) I haven't played it a whole lot, since whenver I get a non-zombie with me to take back to the safe room they tend to knock me into a crowd of zombies...but just aimlessly wandering around and beating zombies doesn't get old. In my first phase of playing I'd give it an A/B-
Ayingel 24 Posted August 27, 2006 The Full Metal Alchemist Movie Grade: A SUCH a GOOD movie! The plot was a little confusing in the beginning, but after the first five minutes I realized what was going on (not like it was really that hard anyway). It seemed like almost every character from the series was somehow involved in the movie (yaknow...the whole equivalent exchange thing ), so it was interesting seeing how everyone played in. Even Hitler was in the movie! Fue interesante. Tho I definately think that the audience was amazing with this one. One guy in a homemade Roy costume, and me gothed out...we got a picture on Ely's disposable camera. We were all acting like we knew each other. I really got a kick out of it. If you've ever watched the series, the movie is definately worth it, but only if you've seen the last DVD of the series (because otherwise you'll be confused). I can't wait for this to come out on DVD! Anyway...go see it!
Alexander 0 Posted August 28, 2006 Little Miss Sunshine: A I would give the movie a lower grade, maybe an A-, but it was a great movie. The reason I might give it a lower grade would be I would have liked a bit more depth and drama to the characters, but saying that would be a representation of what I want and not what the film represents. I suggest you all see it, you will relate to at least one of the characters in some way.
Brumak 2 Posted August 29, 2006 Just watched the original Thai version of The Protector....which is either already out or comes out soon. A GREAT martial arts movie, although the soundtrack and scene transitions could use some work. I just hope the theatrical version isn't changed.... I won't say anything else about it because I don't want to give any spoilers.
Princess 35 Posted September 7, 2006 (edited) Virginia Coalition Live at the 9:30 Club Grade A+ This 2 disc album is amazing. It's two hours of some of the most energetic songs that VACO can put together. There's energy in a live cd that's totally missing in a studio cut, especially with the little added in parts to songs and songs that you don't expect to hear, like Lean on Me. One of my favorite parts is when Andy is introducing Jarrett proclaiming him "Rescued from his parents basement for the price of two ewoks, a jawa, a sandperson and Boba Fett." Brumak 2 Posted September 12, 2006 Finally watched Syriana tonight, been wanting to see it since I saw the previews in theatres. A+ I liked the way they used the different main characters to give the viewer the different point of views from different perspectives, which I'd say is a requirement for anyone interested in the Middle Eastern Oil affair and whatnot. What kind of irked me, not about the movie...but one of my friends who I watched it with seemed to think that it gave the impression that the American Oil Company's are power hungry, greedy and corrupt. Hm...imagine the audacity of claiming that
Radioactive Isotope 29 Posted October 3, 2006 The Place Promised in Our Early Days and Voices From A Distant Star: B-/C+ TPPIOED is about three friends: Takuya, Hiroki, and Saiyuri. Takuya and Hiroki are building an airplane to go investigate a strange white tower and promise to take Saiyuri with them. she vanishes for three years, and somehow has been asleep the whole time. her sleep is connected to the tower as if she awakes, the tower opens a rift into other dimensions and swallows the earth in the process. now Takuya and Hiroki must finish their plane, fulfill their promise, and destroy the tower. VFADS is about two friends, Mikako and Noboru. there is a strange alien race systematically erradicating the humans, and Mikako volunteers to fight while Noboru stays behind. the only way they keep in touch with each other is through cell phone text messages. as Mikako gets farther and farther away, her messages take longer and longer to reach Noboru, putting a strain on their relationship. he grows older while she stays the same age. i give both films a B-/C+ because the stories are really good, interesting ideas. however, they fail to meet my expectations. TPPIOED is 90 minutes long, and it seems like nothing really happens. VFADS is only 30 minutes, and i felt so much more could have been done with it. that and i wanted to hear the theme song in Japanese, not English (i'm a bit of a purist. it just sounds better that way). the director was hailed as "the new Miazaki" (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, Howl's Moving Castle), but i don't think he/she (i couldn't tell from the name) holds a candle to Miazaki. i just wasn't real impressed with these two films. Ayingel 24 Posted October 30, 2006 Man of the Year: A- Good movie. Robin Williams is in a really good role here. The movie did bring up a lot of good questions and issues and I was kinda taken by surprised at how it made me think about the upcoming election...and of some questions I'd like to ask of the candidates this year. The movie has it's funny moments, and it's definately not funny moments. I'd recommend this movie, actually, to a lot of people.
Brumak 2 Posted October 30, 2006 The moment I saw the trailer for that I wanted to see it....Robin Williams is one of my favorite actors and he's great at being serious and funny....so he couldn't have done too bad. I'll have to see it as soon as I can...

Drake 53 Posted October 30, 2006 (edited) It was less a comedy than what I thought from the trailers...but trailers have a way of fooling you sometimes. It was less a comedy about politics and more the politics about a comedian. I still enjoyed it, but it was not what I had expected.
