about how easy kids have it these days. Help us out

Amanda*red+u

7:25

lol

7:25

so i stopped by my hs today to see if they had any goggles i could get

7:26

i know that when we were in high school we weren't nearly as whiny and we did what our coaches told us to do

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:26

lol

7:26

Times have changed

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:29

yeah and kids today suck

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:29

yes they do

7:29

Hell my undergrads suck

MSN

...

Almost every day I find myself wondering... am I really that much older than my students?

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:31

i know

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:31

And I am.

7:31

They don't even remember the "This is your brain, this is your brain on drugs" ad with the frying egg...

7:32

They know the phrase, but no clue where it came from

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:32

they've never known life without AIDS

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:32

nope

7:32

I've got some that have never seen the following movies:

7:32

Ghostbusters

7:32

Breakfast Club

7:32

Ferris Bueller's Day Off

7:32

Back to the Future

7:33

There's even some that don't know who Michael J. Fox is!

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:33

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:33

I KNOW!

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:33

what the ewok?

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:33

It's sad

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:34

i know

7:34

and they expect everything to be given to them

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:34

Yup

7:34

Which, if you think about that list of movies was the opposite of the theme

7:34

None of those movies were about NOT doing something

7:35

*sighs*

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:35

i'm sorry, when i have kids, they are not getting a cell phone until they have a car

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:35

lol I didn't

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:35

unless they're involved in athletics

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:35

Then again, they weren't really all that widely available until I got a car....

7:35

lol

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:36

of course, i called my parents collect once from a pay phone to come pick me up once

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:36

Kids: "What's collect? What's a payphone?"

7:36

They've never NOT had Blackberries

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:37

honestly, i've been watching a lot of little house on the prarie lately

7:37

those kids can do long division in their heads

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:37

lol

7:37

yeah

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:37

we sound like a couple of old ladies

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:37

lol yes we do

7:38

Well I mean, when Diana ask's the class if they remember something and none of them raise their hands and *I* have to explain it...

7:38

sad world we're livin in

7:39

They think their high-top sneakers and fo-hawk hairstyles are SO original

7:39

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:39

no, the 80s are repeating themselves

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:39

Which is kinda nauseating if you think about it. Bad time in fashion history

7:39

Now if the movies and music could resurface...

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:40

you need some refreshment, there's an 80s pop channel on Pandora

7:40

leggings should have stayed dead

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:40

TOTALLY

7:40

Because they are NOT being done right

7:41

Leggings. Are. NOT. Pants

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:41

no they're not

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:41

I will OCCASIONALLY wear a black pair with a skirt or dress that's just a little too short for my tastes

7:41

but my ass is totally covered

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:41

i don't even own any

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:42

One pair.

7:42

The rule is: if it's too short to wear without leggings, wear pants with it

7:43

And you know they only think Paula Abdul is that chick that was on Idol and has that dance show now

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:44

*sigh*

7:44

He's a cold hearted snake...

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:44

yup that'd totally get blank stares

7:45

They've probably never seen a Schwarzenegger movie in a theater

7:46

OR a movie with Harrison Ford before he went grey

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:46

he's such a sexy old man though

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:46

Yes ma'am he is

7:46

I've kinda got a thing for Liam Neeson too, lol

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:47

i bet they've never had to try to get the timing just right to tape a song off the radio

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:47

Oh god! No!

7:47

And I bet if they sat in my car, they'd wonder what the hell that square hole was for!

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:47

lol

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:47

have no clue why we blow into DVD players when they ski[

7:48

*skip

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:48

lol

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:48

Or why we always go for the directional keypad when we play video games

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:48

or the old Apple Oregon trail

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:49

God I miss that game

7:49

lol

7:49

They take auto-saves for granted

7:49

and have never had to use DOS to retrieve a file

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:49

they don't even know what DOS is

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:50

Or how awful loud floppy discs are when they load

7:50

or what a floppy is lol

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:50

they've never had to go to a library to do research

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:50

Yeah. Never learned the Dewy decimal system

7:50

and can't understand how frustrated I get when the library is incorrect

7:51

I bet they can't three-way a phone call the old way. Remember that?

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:51

yes though i never did it

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:51

So freaking complicated. Had to flash back over at just the right second...

7:52

Never wrote a letter.

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:52

never only got cartoons on Saturday morning

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:52

GOOD cartoons

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:52

worth getting up for

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:53

never paid less than $5 to go to a movie (that wasn't at a reduced admissiont theater)

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:53

never saw the penis cover to The Little Mermaid

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:53

I STILL OWN THAT!!!

7:53

lol never getting rid of it

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:53

me too!

7:53

it's at my parent's house

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:53

yup.

7:54

Don't know how to buy gas without a credit card reader and to have to manually turn on the pump with the handle

MSN

Amanda*red+u

7:54

don't remember gas being less than a dollar

MSN

Mrs. Gilbert *bgca

7:54

some of them $20

7:54

oops $2

7:55

Never used a microfilm machine

Never used a card catalogue

Wow. I'll bet some of those students aren't much younger than me, and I remember most of those things on that list. Heck I remember actual floppy floppy disks. The 5.25". And card catalogs.

Bad furday

I turned the alarm on just from the thread title, but I remember nearly all that you ladies were talking about! :p:D

I remember the "Nothing but net" McDonald's commercials with Larry Bird and Michael Jordan- I still know who those two are and what teams they played for, even though I dislike basketball.

I would know how, if I were to become in possession of a pair, to tighten a pair of Reebok Pumps to my feet.

I remember high top sneakers with two sets of laces!

A hexagonal edged pencil is best for rewinding the cassette tape after it's been caught in the machine.

I know how to use a record player. I also know what a record is. :p

And this one annoys me all the time on Facebook- unlike kids today, I know the difference between "they're", "their", and "there". :p

I forgot about rewinding the tape after the tape player ate it.

They also don't know life before text messages

And Furday talking about basketball, reminded me, I heard the song to Space Jam on the radio yesterday. Life before CGI

Love this movie. Since the NBA is starting to cancel regular season games now, I might just have to watch Space Jam over and over.

Got a better one though...

Tell me this song doesn't make you smile. :D

Double points if you remember the words and sang along.

Changed the thread name to better suit the theme. ;)

My gf mentioned this one to me last night, actually. Fresh Prince of Bel-Air pick up lines. She said, "I think I've seen your picture somewhere before. Oh yeah, that's right. It was in the dictionary next to 'KABLAM!'" :p

Ah yes.

We found good radio stations through Arkansas (the one redeeming quality) and listened to alternative from back in the day when it was called alternative and cool kids shopped at Hot Topic before the emo baby bats chased us to Spencer's.

Aqua and Space Jam have a special place in my heart. Since we listened to them non stop on the way down to Missouri as a child with my three other cousins. And we played Nintendo in the back seat of the super van...with the camper in tow.

Ah yes the van. The real van. None of this mini crap. The ones with the heavy, sticky doors that a kid could throw a shoulder trying to close.

The ones where it takes a projectile going 60 miles an hour to even try to make it through the window.

>.< Good news is as soon as I'm done paying off mom (Beginning of march) I won't have but 600 dollars a month in bills. Bad news is, every penny is going into what I owe parental units and I can't save anything. ugh.
