Guest moozentestproxy Posted March 26, 2005 Free Trade is better for everyone. If you put up tariffs against imports you'll find that you'll get a rise on your exports. Not good for your economy. People will buy less of your goods which will effectively screw over the trained industries in the American economy and the goods you export most, rival industrial nations will fill the gap that you left behind in the market - Also tariffs encourage tension between nations. Ww1 was partially due to Tariffs imposed by Germany and France. The USA is in a "lucky" position right now with her balance of payments, you export far more than you import. Seeing as President Bush wont raise Income tax it's the low US. Dollar which is helping the American economy and partially paying of the Iraq war. So you won't be going on holiday for a while? Who cares? It's partially why you still have a job. Putting up tariffs won?t help you at all. It?s investment into the future what America needs. Free Trade needs to be backed up by a government that is willing to plough money into education and new businesses. A highly skilled workforce is the future. Too bad. Free Trade will stay. And it should. Its benefits outweigh the costs. Of course it still doesn't benefit the average Joe who?s just lost his job to a 4 year old kid who is willing to work harder for less, but life isn't fair only trade is. GI_Admiral 2 Posted March 26, 2005 Free trade means all the businesses will go to third world countries and exploit their people
Guest moozentestproxy Posted March 26, 2005 Free trade means all the businesses will go to third world countries and exploit their people That's a slightly naive way of looking at things. It may be seen as exploit in the eyes of a person who guarantees $5 an hour minimum wage. but it's a god send for someone who doesn't have the right to anything. For example, telecom workers in India get payed National Debt is the real exploiter. Yes. Big companies like Nike hire children to make shoe's and whatnot but that has nothing to do with Free Trade, that's because Nike targets 3rd world countries. Anyhow, they rarely continue that practice now, it isn't good business practice as it looks ethically bad. Noticed a rise in Sneaker prices in the last few years? That's not inflation. The kids go to work because they cannot afford school and that?s due to the old national debt.
GI_Admiral 2 Posted March 26, 2005 They target 3rd world countries and so they make a lot of shoes from children working for a lot less money. If tariffs were up high enough, then Nike would see that it would waste money to make it cheap but have to pay the tariff
Radioactive Isotope 29 Posted March 26, 2005 it's starting to sound like this belongs in the Debate thread. if i could find it....

Princess 35 Posted March 27, 2005 Buh bye Chozen. You used up all your chances long ago and a sock was not a smart idea. Be gone once again
TheUnknown 39 Posted March 27, 2005 The argument that things will be better a few decades from now just astonishes me. People, both workers and small-time factory owners, are losing their livelihoods NOW. And the jobs that are being created are service industry jobs that are part time, with fewer benefits, with lesser pay, and often without union representation. Finally, it always seems to be people that are not losing their jobs who are saying this is a good thing.
Princess 35 Posted March 27, 2005 Yeah, ask my dad who has only had a part time job since he lost his full time job over two years ago what he thinks of all this free trade stuff
Drake 53 Posted March 27, 2005 The argument that things will be better a few decades from now just astonishes me. It astonishes me too. In a few decades, America's welfare money will run dry as will its oil reserves.

Tsl 7 Posted March 27, 2005 He created a sock. That is in itself doing something wrong. He came back after being banished, also wrong no matter if you find a way around it or not. Therefore, he did indeed do something wrong.

Tsl 7 Posted March 27, 2005 I would ban you GI, but unfortunately, only admins carry that power. You'll have to wait for one of them to come along to carry out your request.

TheUnknown 39 Posted March 27, 2005 Did anyone hear of the case of the baby who was removed from his feeding tube AGAINST his parents' (re: legal guardians') wishes? This case happened in TEXAS (backyard of George W. Bush and Tom DeLay), which actually has a law that allows hospitals to arbitrarily remove life support.
Tsl 7 Posted March 27, 2005 this whole case pisses me off. it's no one's buisness but the two family's and her doctors. The goverment has no buisness getting involved in this for their selfish, pathetic political goals. I see these random, detatched, people debating this on CNN and I just want to ram my fist down their throats.
TheUnknown 39 Posted March 27, 2005 They're trying to make it the gay marriage of the 2005-2006 election season. Note that the Shaivo case is in FLORIDA, which has an open governor's seat next year and a possibly-competitive Senate race.
