Most irritating people at work yesterday. So, since I last dropped by here, I started working in a Dorothy Perkins concession in Debenhams (I wonder if either of those exist in America?). Thursdays are late night shopping, which means we're open til 8. From 6-8, I'm basically on my own, since there's nhot enogh customers around to make it worth having two staff. However, it does mean I have to stick to our section, even if the fitting room rail overflows or a customer asks me to fetch something.

At about quarter to seven, a girl comes in with nine black tops. You're only allowed four, so the rest go on the rail to be swapped over. Since there's no one else around, I have to stick around and serve her all the time. Her mother appears with thrtee more black tops.Then she goes away and returns with another two. And then she goes and comes again with two tops and a dress. repeat ad inifitum, or at least until quarter to eight, at which point I told them I was closing the door to stop anyone else going into the fitting room, since we close in fifteen minutes.

Now, i don't know why, but unlike every other night on Thursdays there's no announcements about the store closing soon and the carpark closing. So the girl and her mother come out at 10 to eight and buy five tops, thankfully including one of ours. I go to close the fitting rooms, and bam, there's two more girls in there. I tell them that we're closing soon. At five to I see one girl wander out and look for her top in a different size, obviously planning to change again. I tell the other girl they've got five minutes, and she rings her mum to come and have a look at her top.

At eight o'clock, they're still in there, and the mother hasn't arrived. I tell them the store is closed. The mother appears. She's got a foreign accent, though neither of the daughters did. I tell them the store is closed and security will be here soon. I start getting ready to cash up. I go back and the mother asks if I can get them the top in another size. I say no, it's not my section, and besides, the store is closed. They couldn't pay for it anyway. As warned, security appear. Security tell them the store is closed. At maybe ten past eight, they troop out of the fitting room.

The mother asks if she can pay for the top.

The store is closed. The secruity lady and I both explain the tills are shut down. Security tells her that there's only one door left open now, since (again!) the store is closed. She says no, she has to go downstairs. No, there's only one door open, and that's to the outside world. But she is parked in the carpark. The carpark which shuts and locks up at eight. Which it is now passed.

And she was back today, after I left, looking to buy the top she'd been forced to leave behind. Honestly, what part of 'the store is closed' didn't she understand? She spoke enough English to ask for another top in a different size. I think some people just assume the store can't close until they're done. Not true. Tills go offline. Fitting rooms are shut. Doors are locked. Lights are turned off. Staff leave. All these will happen whether you are done shopping or not, mate. There's no point leaving it that late and assuming it will be okay, because it won't. If I hadn't been on our section (half the other sections aren't manned most of the time - lazy management) then she could easily have been locked in.

Working in retail would be so much easier if it wasn't for the customers...
