tell me about it. for a place that never gets snow, we've got a LOT of snow on the ground. in freakin March. and my husband doesn't own a snow shovel, so we're not going anywhere for awhile.

and the supervisor at my last clinic site hated me. i kinda figured as much, but i didn't want to be right about it.

Snow. It happens. Get used to it, babies.

I got a good 1-2 foot dumping of it all yesterday and for some reason the plows haven't been by yet so it's slow going out there.

As I type, yet another poor barve is spinning his tires, trying to get out of the parking garage beneath my building.

Serious rant here. Stories like this one have been popping up more and more frequently. Quite frankly I am disgusted by the increasing "Nanny State" society that has become so prevelent. And not just in the States. It's happening EVERYWHERE. No recess because someone's precious little snowflake might fall down, skin their knee, get a bacterial infection and die. No grades in school because failing might hurt their fragile self-esteem and they will be traumatized for the rest of their miserable lives. Spanking is considered child abuse. Heck, ANY kind of discipline could get you hauled before Child Social Services or its equivilant.

Now, I recognize that there are things that happen in schools that need to be addressed. Bullying and blatant abuse by teachers or other students being a few examples. Low marks/grades because your kid didn't bother to do his homework is not one of them. We are now firmly in the "Me" generation, where people in general expect privleges to be handed to them instead of working to earn them like generations before did. This includes the children. Yes, they are young, and I as much as anyone would like to be able to shelter them from the evils of this world. It breaks my heart to see a child struggling or in pain, but I realize that many of life's lessons cannot simply be taught. Sometimes you HAVE to fail in order to learn and do better next time. I fear that these children, whose parents are so intent to make sure they get handed everything from grades to X-Boxes, will never learn the value and reward that is a job well done. Some of my proudest moments in life were ones I busted my tail to achieve.

I was not a stellar student, and I look back on Grades 6-9 with no small amount of loathing. Middle School was a nightmare, as was my Freshman and part of my Sophomore years in High School. But I am not traumatized, nor do I think my life is in anyway worse off from the struggles I had. Quite the opposite, in fact. I was obnoxiously proud of a 90% test grade in Pre-Cal my junior year because I busted tail to earn it. It was by far my highest grade all year, but my parents didn't march into my high school demanding that grades be abolished and the teacher be sacked because I was suffering from "high anxiety." Dang right I had high anxiety; I sucked at math! But they worked WITH my teacher to set up after school study sessions, tutoring, have her look at my homework to make sure I understood what was going on, whatever they could think of. But I still did the work.

I worry that these obnoxiously overprotective parents are only raising their kids to be tomorrow's lazy moochers because they can't/refuse to work and want everything handed to them. I'm so sick of this PC society we live in that preaches "tolerance" and yet persecutes basic values.

copied from another board:

My loathing of people in general continues. My dad is the Bishop of our ward, and as such he is responsible for authorizing different kinds of aid to those in need (ie, food orders, rent money, ect). Some Bishops are laxer in handing these out than others. My dad is not one of the laxer ones. He doesn't mind helping people in need, but he will not continue to authorize aid for someone who is not doing anything to better their situation. I applaud his stance. I wish the government would take notes.

So, this semi-active lady in the ward got all in a tizzy because her friend, who isn't even a member of our church, didn't get a food order. Now, I don't know all the details of the situation, nor do I want to. I'm not privy to those details. This other lady did go through the proper channels by meeting with my dad, but for whatever reason, he decided she didn't qualify, as is his job. He has the authority to decide those things and he puts a lot of thought, effort, and prayer into his decisions. He also is very strict on following the food chain, so to speak. Different offices have different responsibilities, and he makes sure they get taken care of by whomever is in charge.

Apparently the first lady thought it was Dad's responsiblity to contact her friend about not getting a food order. People seem to think everything is Dad's job. It's not. He's got a family and work just like everyone else. He doesn't have time to do everything himself. He relays the info to the Relief Society (women's organization) or Elder's Quorum (men's organization) President and they are responsible for contacting individuals. There was a break-down in communication with the Relief Society Pres, and she admitted to and apologized for her error. It happens. The system works, but it's staffed by imperfect volunteers and compounded by those who refuse to go through the proper channels.

Long story short, this woman sent a really nasty e-mail to my mom accusing Dad of playing politics. First off, it's not smart to send an e-mail to the wife of the person you're bad-mouthing. Secondly, if she'd bother to show up to church once in awhile, she would know how Dad likes to run things. She doesn't get to see the hours he spends making sure everyone gets what they need. He doesn't like to not sign off on aid, but he isn't going to let people mooch off the system. She doesn't see the emotional toll these decisions and this office take on my dad. I do. I know he spends a great deal of time and emotional effort on the people of our ward. He knows things about people he wishes he didn't, and he can't unload on anyone because of confidentiality rules (heck, I've heard more than I wanted to on our answering machine when I lived at home. And I'm under the same confidentiality rules as Dad is. My husband is the Elder's Quorum Pres, so I'm still finding out things I don't wanna know about people). When he makes a decision about something, I trust that he has spent a great deal of time thinking and praying about it, and this is the course of action he feels is right. And it's not just because I know my dad. I would trust anyone sitting in that office to do the same.

She also had the nerve to say "if it had been the Bishop's kids, I bet they would have gotten signed off." Bull crap. It's people like her that make me hesitate to go to my dad/Bishop if I did need help because of appearences. Just because I'm his daughter doesn't mean he's automatically going to hand me anything I might think I need. In fact, I think he'd be stricter on me--conciously or unconciously--because of idiots like her. And I don't want to put him in that situation, so I'd have to be in pretty dire straights.

All I can say is it's a good thing my mom is a better person than I. Had it been my husband, I might have actually sent a nasty e-mail in return telling her exactly where she could stick it. I know it wouldn't improve matters, but it would make me feel better. The lady is threatening to start attending a different ward, and I say good riddance. Don't let the door hit you on the way out. Normally I'm more charitable than that, but you start messing with my family, all bets are off. She obviously doesn't know how things work and doesn't care to understand Dad's perspective. She only cares about her own.

So also evil is the fact that I'm now at work with like no sleep again... yay!

I had a can of Red Bull on the train, and then promptly fell asleep. Surely that's wrong...
