What is it about taking a patient to OR with 30 units of platelets ordered but absolutely no RBC's ordered? And no sample in lab. And no bloodbank armband on the patient. And then calling and wanting 4 units of RBCs at that exact minute. And then the patient having an antibody. And it then taking another hour to get compatible blood issued for the patient.

Ok, a patient went to the operating room with 30 units of platelets (the lil things that make your blood clot) ordered. Then once they cut him open, they decide that they want RBCs (Red blood cells). They call the lab and request that we send 4 units of RBCs to the OR but we don't have a specimen to crossmatch (make sure that the blood we're giving is compatible with the patient's blood) and we don't have a bloodbank (BB) id number which is the third form of positive identification needed to issue blood components to a patient. So they send us the specimen and we find out that the patient has an antibody (a lil something in the blood that will react to some antigens (things on RBCs) that a donor unit may have) so that antibody has to be identified and antigen negative blood has to be issued that takes even longer.
