Damn the History Department for saying that they have a history minor, but not telling me what I have to take.

(I'm thinking about dropping from history major to history minor and adding a sociology minor).

I've always wondered, what happens after you fire those bullets into the air. What with the effects of gravity, you'd think they'd rain down upon the heads of those you are mobbing with.

Oops, Verizon isn't screwing me over. Now how the hell did I miss paying a bill?!?

Well...technically speaking. The standard bullet is not propelled from the barrel of an automatic weapon with enough force to break the pull of Earth's gravitational field. Counter-acting its rise is the gravity acceleration constant (which varies slightly depending on proximity to the Earth's core) as well as the friction of the air particles running against it's edges (though this is somewhat negligible due to the aerodynamic shape). We can therefore assume, that yes, the bullets would reach a point where gravity forces them to make a change in direction and begin an earthward plummet. We could also assume however, that the motion of this projectile is parabolic, as the weapon would most probably be fired at some sort of angle (though still "upward"). We can assume the bullet does reach a relatively large height (in relation to the ground), and with the parabolic motion, the shift in any horizontal direction would lead to a larger displacement from the firing point to the landing point on the ground. Of course, we can't neglect the effect of weather patterns. At higher altitudes, the bullet may become displaced to a further degree as it falls due to air currents or simple wind. Of course, we must also consider the speed at which the bullet returns. Because all objects in a fluid (such as a gas, like our nitrogen-based atmosphere) have a terminal velocity, we know that it would reach a limit in it's plunge. Would this speed still be sufficient to cause damage to the average human? Consider dropping a penny from an exceptionally large skyscraper. The penny will reach a speed at which it can bury itself into the concrete below, or at very least, slice through a human skull. A bullet has a larger mass than a penny and is designed for high velocity travel in a gas, so it's devastating effects could only be greater. I theorize that this is relatively insignificant however, as the chances of a bullet being fired at a perpendicular angle to the horizon (ie, Perfectly straight upwards) and then subsequently avoiding any shift in air currents which would displace it from it's path, appear to be low. The possibility of injury, in theory, does not seem to be completely out of the question, but it is moderately safe to assume that mobs are in little danger. Probability of injury increases as the size and density of the mob increase.

All speculation. Of course.

Actually a penny dropped from a building would not be able to impale a human nor create a hole in cement. Due to Air resistance, it will reach terminal velocity and an acceleration of 9.8meters per square seconds...therefore if it hit a person, it would be painful but not fatal. It would hardly leave a mark on the cement. Bullets would be the same...But like CorSec said, chances are they werent shot up at exactly 90 degrees
