While we haven't seen much of The Force Awakens yet, one thing we have seen is the highly controversial cross-guard lightsaber wielded by the mysterious cloaked figure currently known to us only by a brief segment of the teaser trailer, and his name: Kylo Ren. In an interview with the New Yorker, Apple's chief designer Jonathan Ive has recalled a dinner party conversation he attended with Star Wars director JJ Abrams where the topic of conversation turned towards lightsaber design. It's unknown as to how influential Ive's suggestion to Abrams was, but if anybody was going to design a more sinister looking lightsaber it would be Apple. Click here to view the article

For years, plastic toy lightsabers have been available, but Hasbro's new lightsaber system - Bladebuilders - due to launch later this year allows kids (or big kids!) to create a lightsaber of their own design. Different hilts, blades, and connecting parts are available to mix and match for a unique weapon from a more civilized age. The starter pack is said to contain a lightsaber with light and sound, two daggers, an expansion hilt, and several connectors so that you can get started with your custom design right away. Bladebuilders will be on display at the American International Toy Fair in New York this weekend.

It was inevitable that the new Star Wars movie would mean new lightsabers, but new information suggests that prop artists are hard at work constructing new Jedi weapons for use in the upcoming filming due to start later this year. The report from Den of Geek indicates that security has stepped up at Pinewood Studios as construction begins on not only props but sets, too. Well, one set in particular: It was rumored a long while back that a full-scale set of the Millennium Falcon had been designed, and it is now rumored to be being assembled at the studio. There has also been news that much of the model making crew has been hired on 7-year contracts, lending weight to the theory that director JJ Abrams wants a sequel trilogy that is more authentic to the classic Star Wars trilogy, with more practical effects.

Although they have yet to develop the technology, the scientists say they have found a way to bind photons together to form new molecules similar to those that would make up the blade of a Jedi's lightsaber. Mikhail Lukin, physics professor at Harvard university says that "most of the properties of light we know about originate from the fact that photons are massless and do not interact. What we have done is create a special type of medium in which photons interact with each other so strongly that they act as though they have mass, and bind together to form molecules. "It's not an in-apt analogy to compare this to lightsabers. When these photons interact with each other, they're pushing against and deflect each other. The physics of what's happening in these molecules is similar to what we see in the movies." However, given the deadly nature of lightsabers, it's unlikely that we will see them in toy stores any time soon!
