TheUnknown 39 Posted February 28, 2007 http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/17372104/page/2/ Boy dies of a toothache. I sith you not. Stories like this really piss me off. In the richest country in the world, not far from the capital, twelve year olds DIE because they couldn't go to the dentist.
Radioactive Isotope 29 Posted February 28, 2007 stuff like that is why i think we need to concentrate more on American problems before we start telling other countries how to run their governments. not complete isolationism, mind you, but a little more attention to issues at home. TheUnknown 39 Posted February 28, 2007 I think it's past time for a universal healthcare system. ewok the free market.
Radioactive Isotope 29 Posted February 28, 2007 i'm not entirely sure how i feel about a free healthcare system. it sounds great and would eliminate the need for expensive health insurance, but i worry about a bias towards older patients. my Grandfather had quadruple by-pass surgery almost 15 years ago, and i wonder if he would have been able to get it if we had a universal free healthcare. maybe he would, i dunno, but that is an issue i haven't really heard addressed. TheUnknown 39 Posted February 28, 2007 (edited) I think you mean bias against the elderly. Anyways, under a completely private system, your grandfather might have been denied the treatment by the company or might have had his coverage dropped afterwards because he was too much of a risk to the company's bottom line. Edit: Also, do you think a system run by the government would discriminate against the elderly for very long? Old people are the most likely voters AND AARP is arguably the strongest interest group in America. Edited February 28, 2007 by TheUnknown
Radioactive Isotope 29 Posted February 28, 2007 true. i guess there's no way to know until we try it out. i don't see that happening any time soon, though. insurance companies like their money too much.

Mara 29 Posted March 2, 2007 I don't have a link yet for this... But I heard that Prince Charles wants to get rid of all the McDonald's in Great Britain because he thinks it'll make them all healthier.
TheUnknown 39 Posted March 2, 2007 But that would make Beeurd umemployed and the rest of us would have to forgo a cup of coffee or two to pick up the tab... DOWN WITH THE MONARCHY! Doesn't he realize that the last English king to be beheaded was CHARLES I?

Ayingel 24 Posted March 2, 2007 heh...original name A spokesperson for McDonald's said that Charles's comments were "off the cuff and disappointing", adding that he was "clearly unaware" of their new low fat and salad options. it's not like the menu over there is that bad anyway...they're missing things that we have, and if i remember correctly, they don't have a dollar menu, right? Neil1 0 Posted March 2, 2007 They do have an equivalent of the dollar menu. It's called the pound menu,
Andy 60 Posted March 3, 2007 Ehh, I actually respected Charles somewhat. I mean, after all he is the heir apparent to the throne. And he does do a lot of good, but that comment is just... bizarre, IMO. Oh, he DOES have his own range of organic foods which I'm sure he wouldn't hesitate to force upon us if given the chance. Yeah, as much as I don't really love the place, I do feel I have to stick up for it when people say silly things!
