Alexander 0 Posted July 28, 2005 IRA Ending Longtime 'Armed Campaign' BELFAST, Northern Ireland - The Irish Republican Army renounced violence as a political weapon Thursday and said it will resume disarmament, taking a dramatic step designed to revive Northern Ireland peace efforts after a 35-year conflict that killed and maimed thousands. British Prime Minister Tony Blair called the move "a step of unparalleled magnitude," while Prime Minister Bertie Ahern of Ireland said it heralded "the end of the IRA as a paramilitary organization." The White House also welcomed the announcement. "The leadership has formally ordered an end to the armed campaign," the IRA said in a major advance from its opened-ended truce in place since 1997. Chickenman 9 Posted July 28, 2005 Gah...was gonna make this into a major, thread, but you beat me to it. Anyways, I gotta say, good for the IRA. I've always agreed with their mission, but never have I agreed with their tactics. I think it's much better that they're trying to find a peaceful resolution to the conflict. Drake 53 Posted August 2, 2005 A plane crashed at the Toronto International airport (Pearson) about 15 minutes ago (4:45-ish). It was an AirFrance airbus coming in from Paris. I'm watching it live and the emergency vehicles are spraying it with foam. There were 200 people on board and I don't think they know if any survivors had made it. It was right beside one of Ontario's main highways, the 401. Just got updated...the pilot and copilot made it out and they're being debriefed now. I'll add more updates as they come in. Drake 53 Posted August 2, 2005 (edited) Okay...there were 291 passengers. Some of them made it out and were taken to area hospitals. About a minute ago, there was a large secondary explosion. An eye-witness watching from an office building across from the airport saw the primary explosion and said that the fire ball shot into the air about 200 feet before being engulfed in thick black smoke. Another said that the plane landed and was then hit by lightning and lost power. When that happened, the plane lost control of its brakes and all control. Please pray for the passengers still on board! Edited August 2, 2005 by Drake

Ana 15 Posted August 3, 2005 Those people were very fortunate to make it out alive.
Ender 8 Posted August 3, 2005 That lightning bolt looks like it hit right in front of the tail assembly, which on the A340 is where the grand majority of the electronic boards are. That's landing gear, most of the instruments, etc. So yes, they are very lucky.

CorSec 5 Posted August 5, 2005 that's Divine intervention right there. ← Or...ya know. A testament to emergency services, the staff on the plane, and the relative calm of the passengers. Jon Stewart did peice on it last night, and mocked the press for labelling it a "miracle". Nothing miraculous about people doing what they're told. :p
Radioactive Isotope 29 Posted August 5, 2005 and yet usually when a plane crashes, regardless of the reason, people die. when you have an instance where everyone survives, it is a miracle.
Chickenman 9 Posted August 5, 2005 Everyone survived the great cofee spill of '99, but that wasn't particulary miraculous in my book. Though some did recieve extensive injuries due to the burning nature of the cofee involved.
