Princess 35 Posted October 15, 2007 Speaking of radiation, it's party time... my grandma's tibia is no longer lighting up on a PET scan! And needles are fun. At least when I'm sticking them into other people.
Pandora 77 Posted October 15, 2007 Well that's different. Random interjection: Why do they swab the injection site before administering the lethal injection? I have been trying to figure this out for years and I STILL can't get it!
Mara 29 Posted October 15, 2007 To make it sterile?
Uncle Du 22 Posted October 15, 2007 (edited) Who cares, they're gonna die in a few seconds any way!! :p Edited October 15, 2007 by Du
Mara 29 Posted October 15, 2007 I don't know. But I don't know what else it would be for.
Princess 35 Posted October 15, 2007 Ok, 1, swabbing with alcohol does not make a site sterile, it just removes the dirt. You need betadine to make a site sterile. 2. Probably so that if they get a last minute stay of execution the people administering the shot can't be sued if the patient gets sick from a dirty injection site. Uncle Du 22 Posted October 16, 2007 What is this PET scan you speak of? All this medical jargon has me confuzzled. :p
Drake 53 Posted October 16, 2007 Why did you go and ask her that? Now she's just going to spout off some more jargon that no one else (besides JM) knows about (or cares about).
Pandora 77 Posted October 16, 2007 I can understand most of it.... yet I STILL don't want to go to medical school. Ever. Oh! Podly's finally made a career decision! I'm going to be a child/family psychologist!

Radioactive Isotope 29 Posted October 16, 2007 What is this PET scan you speak of? All this medical jargon has me confuzzled. as per Drake's prediction PET stands for Positron Emission Tomography, which means the radioactive isotopes they use for the imaging emit positrons (positively charged electrons with an energy of 511 kEV). tomography means it images the entire body in a 360 degree field. usually they use 18-FDG which is basically radioactive sugar water, which the cancer cells will take up more of than normal tissue due to their higher metabolism. when a cancerous area no longer shows up as "hot," the cancer cells have been removed/killed. there are some organs that are supposed to show up hot (like the liver on a gallium scan). it's all about seeing the radioactive tracer where it's not supposed to be that determines if there's a problem.
