  1. Stormtrooper themed products and exhibits available at San Diego Comic-Con next week have revealed a new iteration of the ubiquitous Star Wars bad guys. The so-called Sith Trooper will appear in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker this December and sports a bright red hue not too dissimilar to the classic Imperial Royal Guard first seen in Star Wars: Episode IV - Return of the Jedi. It is unknown what role these Sith Troopers will play in the movie, especially since the Sith were destroyed (weren't they?). The reveal comes amidst the inevitable raft of licensed merchandise and exclusives to be found at the premier convention for geeks of all fandoms, and brings with it the announcement of an exclusive exhibit showcasing the evolution of the Stormtrooper. Madlyn Burkert of the Lucasfilm archives, who is co-producing the exhibit at the Lucasfilm Pavillion said "It has some really unique aesthetics to it, and it has some subtle ties to previous stormtrooper designs, which I think fans will enjoy discovering." The new Sith Trooper themed merchandise includes Funko Pop!, Hasbro Black Series, backbacks, exclusive pins, kids customes, and more. Check out the StarWars.com Sith Trooper reveal for a more comprehensive list and pictures.
  2. Lucasfilm has confirmed the identity of the First Order stormtrooper dubbed "TR-8R" by internet meme artists after he yelled "traitor!" at Finn in The Force Awakens. The stormtrooper's true designation is FN-2199, and he was one of Finn's squadmates prior to the hero blasting his way out of Starkiller Base and joining the Resistance. Dubbed "Nines" by his friends, he trained alongside Finn (then known as FN-2187) before joining a riot control squad that uses betaplast shields and lightsaber resistant Z9 batons for subduing crowds at odds with the First Order's regime. Nines appeared in the Greg Rucka book Before the Awakening, which includes a nifty illustration by Phil Noto showing the red-haired stormtrooper sat in the background. On the big screen, he was voiced by David Accord, a sound editor from Skywalker Sound, while stunt actor Liang Yang gave him his moves. It has been hinted that we may not have seen the last of Nines...
  3. The images, which are said to have come from a reliable source, draw inspiration from the original Ralph McQuarrie concepts and build upon the classic Stormtrooper look of the original trilogy to bring a more modern and up to date feel to the Imperial soldiers we already know. The images have not yet been confirmed officially but since the leak photographs have also been seen of physical props, and other Stormtrooper designs such as an updated Snowtrooper.
