  1. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is here, and many fans have been been waiting for answers raised in 2015's The Force Awakens. Does the final chapter of the Skywalker Saga have the answers we seek? First, a warning: If you haven't seen the film, should you read this article? If you want to be given the answers, this article isn't for you; I'm not going to spoil the reveals. If you just want to be assured that The Rise of Skywalker will provide you with an answer, go ahead! If you want to go into The Rise of Skywalker completely unprepared for the rollercoaster that awaits you, stop reading! Now that's out of the way, let's take a look the big questions that get answered in The Rise of Skywalker. What does the title mean? When the title was revealed to be The Rise of Skywalker there was much speculation as to what this could mean or who this could refer to. Rest assured that this is answers, although the answer is more metaphorical than literal. Is Palpatine really back? The big reveal of the first Rise of Skywalker teaser trailer at Star Wars Celebration this year was the fact that Ian McDiarmid had returned as the late Emperor Palpatine, although McDiarmid himself shrugged it off saying that he had only popped in for a laugh. Further trailers and marketing materials made it clear that there was more to the Emperor's reappearance than that. Luckily, the issue of whether Palpatine really has returned or not is cleared up pretty quickly. Who was Snoke? Supreme Leader Snoke was a mysterious character from the get-go, and The Force Awakens launched a thousand theories over who this guy really was. Then The Last Jedi came along and removed him from the picture without answering any of the questions about his backstory, much to the chagrin of many fans. Much like the issue of Palpatine, Snoke is handled very early on in The Rise of Skywalker, but whether the reveal is satisfying or not may depend on which of the many theories you had bought into. Why is Rey so powerful, and were her parents really just nobodies? Perhaps one of the least satisfying moments of The Last Jedi was Kylo's revelation that Rey's parents were nobody important, apparently killing off the fan theories about her parentage which ranged from descendant of [any major lore character] to reincarnation of [any major lore character]. One thing that has kept the theories alive is the fact that Kylo Ren isn't exactly what you would call a reliable narrator; his agenda was to manipulate Rey into join him. The Rise of Skywalker handles the issue of Rey's parentage as a major plot point, and I am sure the truth will prove to be one of the more satisfying answers you get from The Rise of Skywalker. Does Leia get a fitting send-off? When Carrie Fisher passed away in 2016, the fandom mourned for our lost Princess, who was set to play a larger role in the final part of the Skywalker Saga. Unused footage from The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi have been used to ensure Leia could remain a part of the story, and I think that this was done tastefully, with her passing handled in a suitable poignant way which paid respect to the character and to the memory of Carrie Fisher. So what about that Jedi Prophecy? A Chosen One shall come, born of no father, and through him will ultimate balance in the Force be restored. Jedi prophecy I'm throwing this in here, because although I haven't heard many people explicitly asking about the prophecy, it and the concept of balance are a kind of meta thread running through the Skywalker Saga. The Jedi Prophecy was a major plot point of the prequel trilogy, with Anakin Skywalker being believed to be the Chosen One, only instead of bringing balance to the Force he was seduced by the dark side and corrupted by Palpatine, only to later turn against his master and destroy the Sith's hold over the galaxy. Many argue that Anakin's choice to destroy his master in Return of the Jedi doesn't actually bring balance to the Force, and wonder if the prophecy was just planted by the Sith. There is a case for arguing that The Rise of Skywalker delivers the promised balanced in the Force in a way that leaves the text of the prophecy unambiguously true - but that's a debate for another time.
  2. Daisy Ridley has said during an interview with Vulture, that she can't imagine playing Rey again after Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. These comments came when Ridley was asked about the possibility of seeing Rey again in one of the movies that Disney and Lucasfilm have mapped out for the next few years. The Rise of Skywalker has a very satisfying conclusion that "feels like an end", according to Ridley, who went on to explain that filmmakers have a lot of other stories to cover. She didn't rule it out, however, so even if we don't see Rey or her costars in the upcoming new trilogy helmed by Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and DB Weiss, she may reappear in the future should the opportunity present itself. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will be released on 19 December.
  3. The run up to Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is, as expected, full of rumour and speculation due to the lack of concrete details being released by Disney and Lucasfilm, but one fan theory concerning Rey has been laid to rest by Lucasfilm Story Group member Pablo Hidalgo. When asked whether Han Solo was Rey's father, Hidalgo flat out shut down the long-established theory. The theory hinges on Han and Leia's estrangement, which was clear from The Force Awakens, but Hidalgo's tweet confirms that this does not fit with the established canon timeline of events. So, who are Rey's parents? Although this has been a fairly huge discussion point amongst fans throughout production of the Star Wars sequels trilogy, Rian Johnson's take on the question during The Last Jedi would have us believe that Rey's parents were nobody special. Actress Daisy Ridley previously stated that she knew who Rey's parents were, and Episode IX's former director Colin Trevorrow had also said that the answer to the question would be satisfying as she was important to the saga. We're going to make sure that that answer is deeply and profoundly satisfying. Rey is a character that is important in this universe, not just in the context of The Force Awakens, but in the entire galaxy. Colin Trevorrow Of course, this was said before Trevorrow left the project due to creative differences, and while returning director JJ Abrams has remained tight-lipped about the facts of Rey's parentage he has promised that "there's more to the story than you've seen." Other theories point at John Williams' film score for hints, with Rey's theme containing motifs from both Luke Skywalker's and Darth Vader's themes. Then of course there is the rumour that she is a Palpatine, having been fathered by the erstwhile Emperor or conceived by his manipulation of the Force, and the surprise reveal of Ian McDiarmid at Celebration Chicago this year lends more weight to this theory. Further rumours still try to connect the dots to prove that Rey is the grand-daughter of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Ultimately we'll find out if the question is answered when Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is released this December.
  4. Daisy Ridley, the actress who portrays Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars Episode VIII has revealed that she knows the identities of her characters parents, as she put an end to speculation that Rey's mother would be Jyn Erso from upcoming anthology film Rogue One. There has been much speculation surrounding the Rey's parentage, and this has remained one of the unanswered mysteries of the Star Wars sequels. Additionally, director JJ Abrams added further fuel to the fire by revealing that Rey's parents are apparently not present in The Force Awakens. Abrams remained cryptic about the truth, however, stating only that "I can’t possibly say in this moment who they are. But I will say it is something that Rey thinks about, too." This would appear to rule out the big three, Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo, meaning that Rey and Kylo Ren may not be related as many fans have speculated. Update: JJ Abrams has since clarified his statement by telling Entertainment Weekly that Rey "doesn’t discover [her parents] in Episode VII. Not that they may not already be in her world". So, it is once again open season on speculation in that area. Despite claiming to know who Rey's parents are Ridley does not seem to think it is that big a deal anyway, instead focusing on the story of Rey finding her own place in the present. Star Wars Episode VIII is said to have a darker tone than The Force Awakens, but has not revealed whether her character will indeed become a fully-fledged Jedi after her meeting with Luke Skywalker. Rogue One is due in cinemas 16 December 2016, with Star Wars Episode VIII releasing on 15 December 2017.

    Who Is Rey?

So I thought it might be worth it to put this discussion in its own topic, since it's a pretty heavy one. This is meant as just a place to speculate and discuss theories, but could involve spoilers, so if you haven't seen the film, you should step out now. Anyway, this is sort of a mash-up of my own theories, as well as the main ones I've heard/seen on the Internet. And then arguments of why they may or not may work. Please free free to offer your own theories or expand on the ones below. #1: She is Luke Skywalker's daughter. Yes: Well, there is the Force. She is strong with it. There seemed to be some kind of connection with Kylo, which could allude to a familial relationship of some kind. His lightsaber called to her when she was at Maz's castle, and she heard the voices of Yoda and Obi-Wan, who trained Luke. She was left on a desert planet by her family, perhaps to keep her safe from the New Order? No: For me, it just seems too obvious? Why doesn't she recognize his name when Han is talking about him? Or even, recognize Han or Leia? Or anyone that Luke would know? Unless Luke put a mind trick/memory eraser/faux memory on her, I don't really see how to reconcile these issues to make her his daughter. Plus, I feel like in all this time, Luke would have found some kind of Jedi teachings, in the midst of establishing his academy. One of which is the no attachments thing, no kids/no marriages, etc. And even if he didn't find those, he should remember what happened to him while with Yoda, when he left to go save Han and Leia on Cloud City. There, his attachments (and lack of training) got the best of him. Yoda even warned him of it. So would he really decide it was a good idea to have a child when he was older, even if he was more mature and trained? (Though on the other hand, why would he agree to train his nephew?) #2: She is Han and Leia's daughter. Yes: Again, she is strong with the Force. And so is Leia, even if she chose not to follow that path. Also, the connection with Kylo, seeming to find her familiar. Perhaps his long-lost sister? Hidden from him so she didn't suffer the same fate? No: Obviously again, the recognition of Han or Leia. If they are her parents, she doesn't seem to realize it. And again, I figure only a trick of the Force could make her forget/give her new memories. #3: She is merely a student of Luke's who escaped before Kylo and his Knights of Ren took care of the other students. Yes: Seems a plausible origin to me. And would explain why she isn't familiar with anyone who could have been related to her. Maybe the connection with Kylo is merely because he remembers him from Luke's training sessions all those years ago. No: I feel like her story is much more important than for her to just be some random Force-sensitive kid, albeit with great potential, who somehow escaped Kylo's wrath. Kylo, and Snoke, both seemed surprised that she was strong with the Force. #4: She is a descendant/relative of Obi-Wan Kenobi. Yes: She has the Force. She's hidden away. No: Did Obi-Wan suddenly decide the Jedi Code didn't matter after Order-66 while he was watching over Luke? The whole "no attachment" thing. For him to have a child, and then a granddaughter/Rey? But yeah... what do you guys think of these theories? Is one more plausible than the others? Do you have other ideas of who Rey might be?
