  1. Update: Since time of publishing it has been discovered that the vacancies are for only marketing and public relations roles. The original article is preserved below for reference. Job vacancies have appeared on the Disney Careers website that appear to indicate a return to in-house development of Star Wars games. The new positions at Lucasfilm Games include high level develop roles such as Producers and Art Directors for work on new console projects. Developer EA Games has held exclusive development rights for Star Wars properties on most consoles since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012; this included LucasArts, which they promptly shuttered. While LucasArts released many Star Wars games over the years, EA has only managed to release two AAA titles: Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefront 2, both of which have had a mixed reception. Jedi: Fallen Order is currently still in development by EA subsidiary Respawn Entertainment, but little is known about the game at this time, although new details are expected at Celebration next month. So far more Star Wars projects have been cancelled than released, including a game by Dead Space developer Visceral, and Star Wars 1313 which was in development by LucasArts at the time it was closed. This may indicate that Disney does not intend to renew EA's exclusive hold of the Star Wars licence. Could we see a return to the glory days of Star Wars gaming?

Star Wars gaming on Xbox One

Microsoft have announced that a new slew of classic Xbox titles will become compatible with their Xbox One console, including an impressive collection of Star Wars games which will join other titles in the Games On Demand section of the Xbox marketplace on 26 April 2018. The original Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic was previously added when the backwards compatible section was launched last year. You can find the full list of Star Wars games that will be available on Xbox Games On Demand below: Star Wars: Battlefront Star Wars: Battlefront II Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy Star Wars: Jedi Starfighter Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords Star Wars: Republic Commando Additionally, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is available under the Xbox One X Enhanced series with updated graphics and visual effects. If you're looking for something a bit more recent, Xbox One titles Star Wars: Battlefront and Star Wars: Battlefront II are also available now.
  3. Some long-awaited information about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be revealed at Star Wars Celebration in Chicago this April. New details, and gameplay footage are expected to be shown during a panel at the fan convention. Jedi: Fallen Order is developed by Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind Apex Legends, and will be the first major single-player game focused on lightsaber combat and Force powers since 2010's The Force Unleashed II. All that we know so far is that the game will put players in the shoes of a Jedi padawan who survived Order 66, although it has not been specified how long after the fall of the Jedi Order the game takes place. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is set for release in Fall 2019.
  4. EA have revealed during their recent financial statement that Respawn Entertainment's Star Wars video game, Jedi: Fallen Order, will release in autumn 2019. Despite being highly anticipated by fans there is little information available about Jedi: Fallen Order, and no screenshots or footage has been revealed. The game is set in the period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope, and is said to follow a Jedi being hunted down by agents of the Galactic Empire. Respawn's founder Vince Zampella has said that the game will be a single player action adventure game, that will (unsurprisingly) feature lightsaber combat. Development of the game is being lead by Stig Asmussen who was previously the creative lead on God of War III. In a 2016 blog post, Asmussen stated that Respawn "promise to pay respect to the Star Wars legacy at all times, a fact that will be constantly reinforced and honored as a central game design tenet." We impatiently await further details.
  5. DICE's Star Wars Battlefront has opened the floodgates for gamers to sign up for the closed alpha testing of this eagerly anticipated game. One of the most eagerly awaited Star Wars video games in years, the long awaited reboot of the Star Wars Battlefront franchise has now launched the closed alpha sign-up process. The alpha is only for PC users, and does require an Origin account to join. You can head over to the Battlefront alpha application site now to apply for one of the limited spots available. Not everybody is being accepted, however, but if you are successful you will receive a confirmation email and see Battlefront appear alongside your other games in your Origin library. Launching the game is disabled for now but will be available to install from 1st July, ready for alpha testing to begin. As it is an alpha, you can expect bugs and inconsistent performance issues, with the system requirements allegedly being that you need a quad-core CPU, 6 GB RAM, at least an Nvidia GeForce GTX-680 or AMD Radeon HD 7970 with 2 GB RAM, and 64-bit versions of either Windows 7 or 8. Star Wars Battlefront is due for release on 17th November 2015, but in the mean time here is 5 minutes of gameplay footage from the game: View full article

  7. Star Wars: Uprising, due later this year, will show us the state of the galaxy in the aftermath of Return of the Jedi. Developed by Kabam, Star Wars: Uprising is a new mobile game set after the events of the Battle of Endor in Return of the Jedi, where we finally saw the victory of the Rebel Alliance and the death of the Emperor. This new game which forms part of the official Star Wars canon storyline will give a glimpse of the aftermath of those events. We already know that things aren't going to be rosy in that galaxy far far away by the time The Force Awakens rolls around, but what we don't know is how the Rebel victory fell short of achieving it's goal to restore the Republic. The trailer for Uprising suggests that new enemies are rising to fill the power vacuum left by the Emperor, and you'll get the chance to take them on. Star Wars: Uprising is scheduled to release later this year for Android and iOS, with beta testing due this summer. Don't forget to check out the official Star Wars: Uprising site and sign up for updates. View full article

Visceral Games drops Han Solo hints

It has long been known that Visceral Games, a subsidiary of Electronic Arts has been working on a Star Wars project, but up until now nothing has been mentioned about what type of game they are developing. Visceral are perhaps most well known for their science fiction survival horror series Dead Space, and more recently Battlefield Hardline; a game that unlike previous other Battlefield games revolves around crime and policing rather than warfare. Staff members from the studio took to Twitter to drop hints about the upcoming game, including Scott Warner, the game's director, who posted a pirate-like flag with a stormtrooper helmet and crossbones accompanied by the words "It's better to be a pirate than to join the navy." Other hints dropped by staff members include more pirate references and a new decoration for their office in the form of a life-size statue of Han Solo frozen in carbonite.

  23. Multiplayer support for popular Star Wars games Empire at War and Battlefront 2, meaning players who still use those games will find that the multiplayer functions of the game no longer work. GameSpy, which was owned by entertainment network IGN, was effectively shut down in February 2013 and Glu Mobile maintained servers up until recently when it was announced that the remainder of the legacy multiplayer servers will cease operating. This news comes as a blow to Star Wars gamers, particularly Battlefront fans who still have a while to go before the newest iteration of Battlefront is released next year.

  25. Previously rumored to have been in the works, it has been suggested that Disney currently has no plans to bring Star Wars characters and worlds to its popular Disney Infinity figure-collecting gaming universe. The update came via the Disney Store's Facebook page where they stated that while there were no plans for Star Wars to join Infinity, there were still exciting things to come for gaming and collectibles fans alike. This may just be a sign that Star Wars is currently off-limits while the dust settles around the Star Wars Episode VII announcements, including the new all-encompassing single continuity that has replaced the Expanded Universe. One big new acquired franchise is coming to Infinity however, as it was recently announced that Marvel characters would be introduced into Disney Infinity 2.0, a backwards compatible upgraded version of the game which will debut on all consoles used by the previous version plus Xbox One and PS4 later this year.
