  1. Star Wars: Battlefront II: Celebration Edition will be free on Epic Games Store from 14 January until the 21st. The game will, for next week only, be free to keep as part of your Epic Games library, with the previous two years of content that was previously available through in-game purchases. As the second game in the rebooted series from DICE and EA, Battlefront II is playable both online and offline and includes familiar heroes and villains from across the franchise up to and including The Rise of Skywalker customisations that were released on 20 December 2019. So set a reminder for 14 January to check the Epic Games Store, as the offer won't be around forever.

    Jedi: Fallen Order

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order is a single-player action-adventure game developed by Respawn Entertainment and published by Electronic Arts. It was released on 15 November 2019, and is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Windows platforms. The game is set in 14 BBY, five years after Revenge of the Sith, and the player assumes the role of Cal Kestis, a former Jedi padawan who survived Order 66. Cal rediscovers his connection to the Force as he progresses through his quest to obtain a Jedi holocron that could hold the key to rebuilding the Jedi Order. Cal's lightsaber is fully customisable as you collect new parts that can be used in various combinations. Development The game was announced on 4 May 2016 and its title was revealed at E3 2018, but little information was given between then and the game's debut at Star Wars Celebration Chicago in April 2019. Shortly before the panel, an EA community manager revealed via Reddit that the game uses Unreal Engine 4, not the Frostbite engine as was originally thought. It was also revealed on Twitter that the game would be single-player only, and would not include microtransactions. According to game director, Stig Asmussen, development of the game was already in progress when it was decided that it would be adapted into the Star Wars universe. Lucasfilm were reportedly not initially interested in a Jedi-centric game, until an original story was developed that would justify it. Gameplay footage was revealed at EA Play 2019 on 8 June, with the official trailer debuting at the Xbox E3 Briefing the following day. Merchandise debuted on Triple Force Friday in the following October, ready for the game's release on 15 November. Pre-order bonuses included a unique orange lightsaber blade, as well as an extra skin for BD-1 and two lightsaber hilts. Reception Despite some apparent initial backlash that Respawn were playing it "too safe" by choosing white male protagonist, Jedi: Fallen Order received mostly favourable reviews from critics and players alike upon release, and was widely praised as a vast improvement over EA's previous Star Wars releases. The game's lack of microtransactions and multiplayer has been seen by some as proof that there is still a place in the market for single-player story-driven titles, contrary to EA's general strategy of recent years. Sequel In December 2019 EA posted job vacancies for their Star Wars team at Respawn Entertainment, prompting speculation that a sequel to Jedi: Fallen Order was in development, although this has not been confirmed.

New Star Wars game in development?

Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order launched last month and was widely hailed as a fantastic success for single-player gaming, with EA taking a hands-off approach and allowing Respawn Entertainment to do their thing, without insisting on features such as microtransactions or lootboxes; which have become commonplace in gaming in recent years. Now, it looks like they are set to continue developing their Star Wars portfolio, as new job posting at EA appears to show that they are bolstering the workforce in their Star Wars team at Respawn. This could point to a sequel for Jedi: Fallen Order, which would be the safe play given that they have already proven to EA that the single-player story-driven concepts still work in 2019, or it could equally mean that Respawn are gearing up to tackle another aspect of the Star Wars universe. Fans were clamouring for a Bounty Hunter-esque game even before The Mandalorian won streamers over, and the success of the Disney+ TV show could have been the necessary push to bring us something similar to the once highly anticipated Star Wars 1313 which was canned in 2013 when Disney closed LucasArts. We eagerly await new information, although given the development cycle of gaming, we don't expect it to be forthcoming any time soon.

    Jedi: Fallen Order launch trailer

The official launch trailer for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order has been released, along with new gameplay footage available across the web from a portion of the game that was made available to previewers in the games industry. Feedback from those that have played the game is mostly positive at the moment, with reviewers saying the game is far deeper than initial previews lead them to believe. Even for non-Star Wars fans, Jedi: Fallen Order represents an interesting proposition - a AAA title focusing on a singleplayer story mode, with no micro-transactions or multiplayer mode in stark contrast to the usual offerings from EA who have previously derided these types of games as being unwanted by modern gamers. Success has the potential to spin EA's current ethos on its head and drive more investment to singleplayer story driven gaming. Check out the trailer below: Jedi: Fallen Order releases on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows on 15 November 2019.
  5. Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm have revealed new key art for Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order ahead of the EA Play live stream set to reveal long-awaited gameplay footage of the upcoming single-player story-driven action adventure game. We now have a more detailed look at Cal Kestis, the former Jedi padawan and survivor of Order 66, who will be our main character in Jedi: Fallen Order along with some other interesting details. Cal appears to be holding the damaged lightsaber we have already seen in the artwork and reveal trailer for the game. The grounded Venator-class Star Destroyer in the background looks to be the one also seen being dismantled in the trailer, in what is presumed to be an early part of the game. There is a strong Imperial presence in the poster, which not unexpected considering the era in which Jedi: Fallen Order is set; AT-ATs, AT-STs, and TIE fighters can all be seen as can the Second Sister Inquisitor and a pair of the new Purge Troopers. Respawn and Lucasfilm will be hosting a livestream at EA Play tomorrow which promises to give us a glimpse of gameplay footage. You can watch the stream live on YouTube at 9:30 am PT (check the event calendar for your local time). Jedi: Fallen Order will be released on 15 November 2019.
  6. The galaxy-wide premiere of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order was presented at Celebration today, with Respawn Entertainment CEO Vince Zampella, Game Director Stig Asmussen, and their team dishing out the details for their new single-player game coming later this year. With only seven months to go, fans have been clamouring for some footage, and we've finally been treated to a trailer, which you can find further down the page, and new information about the story and it's main character. The game follows Jedi padawan Cal Kestis (played by Gotham's Cameron Monaghan, who joined the developers on stage) who survived the Order 66 and has been keeping his head down, hiding from the Empire in plain sight as a scrapper on the planet Braka, salvaging old warships and debris left behind by The Clone War. When his cover is blown he is forced to go on the run from the Empire's Purge Troopers and the Inquisitors. New planets and characters have been developed for the game, and the team wanted the combat to be authentic and meaningful. The lightsaber content will be easy to pick up but with a layer of depth that could mean it is difficult to fully master. This may mean it is similar to the lightsaber combat found in Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy. When asked about Cal's lightsaber the response was "how do you know it's Cal's lightsaber?" The lightsaber is said to be integral to the story, and will "grow and evolve" as the story progresses. Cal will be accompanied by a "buddy droid", BD-1, who is a small companion with whom Cal has a boy-and-his-dog type relationship. BD-1's voice was created by Ben Burtt who also created R2D2's voice, amongst many other iconic sounds of the classic trilogy. Cal also has a mentor to share his adventure with, a former Jedi Knight played by actress Debra Wilson. One of Cal's primary rivals is the Second Sister Inquisitor, who along with the Purge Troopers was developed specifically for Jedi: Fallen Order but has already been seen in Marvel's Darth Vader comic series. The Purge Troopers are trained to fight Jedi using a weapon similar to the electrostaffs used by General Grievous' guards in Revenge of the Sith; they respond to Jedi sightings and investigate before the far less numerous Inquisitors are dispatched to the scene. Confirming recent leaks from people involved in the game's development it was announced that Fallen Order is a single-player only story driven game with no microtransactions, and that it was built in Unreal Engine 4, rather than EA's proprietary and much maligned game engine Frostbite 3, which has been a source of frustration for players of other recently released games such as Anthem. The team that has been brought together to work on the game have come from a mix of backgrounds, having worked on games such as Uncharted, God of War, and Metal Gear. They are all big fans of Star Wars and were committed to ensuring that they remain faithful to the universe and treated the source material with respect. Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order will be released on Xbox, PS4, and PC on 15 November 2019.
  7. Update: Since time of publishing it has been discovered that the vacancies are for only marketing and public relations roles. The original article is preserved below for reference. Job vacancies have appeared on the Disney Careers website that appear to indicate a return to in-house development of Star Wars games. The new positions at Lucasfilm Games include high level develop roles such as Producers and Art Directors for work on new console projects. Developer EA Games has held exclusive development rights for Star Wars properties on most consoles since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012; this included LucasArts, which they promptly shuttered. While LucasArts released many Star Wars games over the years, EA has only managed to release two AAA titles: Star Wars Battlefront and Battlefront 2, both of which have had a mixed reception. Jedi: Fallen Order is currently still in development by EA subsidiary Respawn Entertainment, but little is known about the game at this time, although new details are expected at Celebration next month. So far more Star Wars projects have been cancelled than released, including a game by Dead Space developer Visceral, and Star Wars 1313 which was in development by LucasArts at the time it was closed. This may indicate that Disney does not intend to renew EA's exclusive hold of the Star Wars licence. Could we see a return to the glory days of Star Wars gaming?
  8. DICE's Star Wars Battlefront has opened the floodgates for gamers to sign up for the closed alpha testing of this eagerly anticipated game. One of the most eagerly awaited Star Wars video games in years, the long awaited reboot of the Star Wars Battlefront franchise has now launched the closed alpha sign-up process. The alpha is only for PC users, and does require an Origin account to join. You can head over to the Battlefront alpha application site now to apply for one of the limited spots available. Not everybody is being accepted, however, but if you are successful you will receive a confirmation email and see Battlefront appear alongside your other games in your Origin library. Launching the game is disabled for now but will be available to install from 1st July, ready for alpha testing to begin. As it is an alpha, you can expect bugs and inconsistent performance issues, with the system requirements allegedly being that you need a quad-core CPU, 6 GB RAM, at least an Nvidia GeForce GTX-680 or AMD Radeon HD 7970 with 2 GB RAM, and 64-bit versions of either Windows 7 or 8. Star Wars Battlefront is due for release on 17th November 2015, but in the mean time here is 5 minutes of gameplay footage from the game: View full article
