  1. Before Rian Johnson's Star Wars: The Last Jedi was released, it was announced that the director was already working on a new Star Wars trilogy of his own, that would be set apart from The Skywalker Saga, much like Rogue One. However, after the mixed reaction to his stab at the main series, and the subsequent lackluster box office performance of Solo, things went quiet on the anthology film front. Recently, Johnson was caught on the red carpet at the Toronto Film Festival, and was asked about his Star Wars project: We’ll see. I am still talking to Lucasfilm and they are figuring out what they are doing. We’ll see what happens. I’ll be thrilled if it happens. Rian Johnson This has cast further doubt on the fate of his trilogy, which was expected to pick up on a few of the seeds sown in The Last Jedi. In May 2019 several Star Wars film release dates were confirmed by Disney CEO Bob Iger, with the next spin-off film being pencilled in for 16 December 2022 and confirmed to be the David Benioff & DB Weiss project which is heavily rumoured to be set in the Old Republic era. Lucasfilm and Disney have yet to make any official statement about the status of Johnson's future in the Star Wars franchise, nor have they confirmed any details for the Star Wars movies set for release in 2024 and 2026.
  2. Disney have revealed a schedule which pinpoints the movie release dates across their vast empire of brands, including Star Wars. Three Star Wars movies have been assigned release dates, but no further information accompanies the untitled movies. The movies are set for release in 2022, 2024, and 2026, which is a distinctive enough pattern that it isn't too much of a stretch to speculate that these are the Rian Johnson Star Wars trilogy that was announced back in 2017. See also: Star Wars Movie Release Schedule Rian Johnson's last foray into Star Wars was the divisive second episode of the sequel trilogy, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it is widely expected that his trilogy will pick up on some of the unresolved threads from that film. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker will release this December, leaving us with a three-year gap before the next Star Wars film hits the big screen.

    Episode VIII is looking great

When asked by Variety.com if she had read the script for the sequel to The Force Awakens, Ridley, who portrays Rey in the movie, responded with "I have. It’s very good; very good" but refused to give any further clues as to what may happen in the movie. Some scenes have allegedly already been filmed for Episode VIII; notably on the Irish island Skellig Michael which we see at the end of The Force Awakens, and main filming is due to begin in January 2016 in order to meet the May 2017 release date Lucasfilm/Disney have set. Pinewood Studio has already revealed that they plan on shooting down any drones that are sent to spy on filming of the new movie, so we can expect a similar level of secrecy for the sequel. Rian Johnson is the director for Episode VIII and is also involved with the script for Episode IX. Johnson's recent work includes the gritty time-travel-ish film Looper, and it is reasonable to expect VII to be darker than it's predecessor in the same way that The Empire Strikes Back was darker than A New Hope. Returning for the next instalment are a host of familiar faces from The Force Awakens; Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron), Gwendoline Christie (Captain Phasma), John Boyega (Finn), and Daisy Ridley (Rey) have all been confirmed, along with Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker). It is also expected that Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), Andy Serkis (Supreme Leader Snoke), Domhnall Gleeson’s (General Hux), will all be making a reappearance and actor Benicio Del Toro has already been confirmed as being newly cast for the sequel, although it is currently unknown what role this is.
