  4. Josh Trank has left the second Star Wars anthology film it has been reported, ending weeks of rumors after his absence from Star Wars Celebration last month. The director, who has directed the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, and is perhaps best known for the found-footage superpower drama Chronicle, was announced as director of the second spin-off movie last year. It had been rumored that disagreements between Trank and the production team had become evident, and although he was due to appear alongside Gareth Edwards during the Rogue One panel at Celebration it was announced at the start of the panel that he would not be attending. In a statement, Trank said "After a year of having the incredible honor of developing with the wonderful and talented people at Lucasfilm, I'm making a personal decision to move forward on a different path. I've put a tremendous amount of thought into this, and I know deep down in my heart that I want to pursue some original creative opportunities." However, according the Hollywood Reporter, the director was fired from the project. The spin-off movies were announced to be called "anthology films" at Celebration, and Josh Trank's film was to be the second in the series, to be released in 2018 between Star Wars Episode VIII and XI. No cast or has yet been announced for the film, but suggested storylines were rumored to revolve around Boba Fett or a young Han Solo. View full article

Pixar + Star Wars = Awesome?

It is likely that this would happen sooner or later, with Star Wars and Pixar both in the hands of Disney, but it looks like the signal has been given for Pixar to get to work on their take on an animated Star Wars movie. Pixar's release schedule is packed at the moment, with Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur, and Finding Dory already in the works, so it's unlikely that we'll see this any time before 2017, but if rumours are true then this would be Pixar's first movie based on an existing franchise. Hopefully Pixar still get to have their take on it, and we don't just end up with a standard animated film that could have been done by anybody. To be a true to Pixar's spirit in an existing property may prove difficult, but I'm sure there are a lot of fans who can't wait to see what this combination would turn out like. With Disney planning to release a Star Wars movie every year, it's inevitable that they will have to use all of their assets to keep the ball rolling. Of course, rumours are rumours and until official word is released by Disney or Pixar, it is anybody's guess what will happen in the future.

    A Change in the Lineup

Thursday, Lucasfilm announced a big change-up in the screenwriters for the next film in the Star Wars series. Michael Arndt (Little Miss Sunshine) is being replaced by the team of director J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan (who has previously been serving as a consultant for the film) in a surprise twist. For those unfamiliar with Kasdan, you may recognize his body of works: The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, and Raiders of the Lost Ark. "I am very excited about the story we have in place and thrilled to have Larry and J.J. working on the script," states Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy. "There are very few people who fundamentally understand the way a Star Wars story works like Larry, and it is nothing short of incredible to have him even more deeply involved in its return to the big screen. J.J. of course is an incredible storyteller in his own right. Michael Arndt has done a terrific job bringing us to this point and we have an amazing filmmaking and design team in place already prepping for production." Currently, the studio seems to be remaining mum on the topic of Arndt's departure. This does bring into question whether the original planned direction for the film will continue (Arndt had originally drafted a 40-50 page document), or if Abrams is going to push more towards something like his Star Trek reboots.
