  3. Mark Hamill has been spotted sporting a fine growth of facial hair worthy of a Jedi Master. On the red carpet in London at the UK premiere of Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy this week, Mark Hamill posed for cameras as he exhibited his masterful facial hair, reminiscent of the beard worn by Sir Alec Guinness in the original Star Wars trilogy. Speaking to the BBC's Lizo Mzimba he explained that he was "contractually obliged" to grow the beard for his role in Star Wars Episode VII, and that it signified Luke Skywalker's role as the mentor figure, like Obi-Wan Kenobi before him. Hamill also revealed how surprised he is to be returning to Star Wars all these years later, and says that he never intended to return to the galaxy far far away. But so far he seemed impressed with the talent of the new cast and is confident that the future of Star Wars is in good hands. Click here to view the article

  5. During the latest Force for Change video message, JJ Abrams has teased us with a glimpse at a new starfighter for Star Wars Episode VII.Latest: Since this article was published, the mystery starfighter has been confirmed as an updated version of the X-wing starfighter. Higher resolution images show the detail of the seam where the wings, or S-foils, split to create the distinctive X-wing shape. Original outdated article continues below. The starship resembles an X-wing similar to those seen in the classic Star Wars trilogy, but seems to lack the split wing arrangement, leading to fan speculation that it may be based on the expanded universe's Z-95 Headhunter. The dual engine set-up is similar to the Z-95 version seen in The Clone Wars TV series, so this starfighter may represent an upgraded model of those ships used by clone trooper pilots. 7. According to sources from IGN Middle East, the actor was on the Episode VII set. But whether this is because he's got a secret role in the movie (though he has said that that would be stupid for him to be in Star Wars), or he was just visiting his friend, director J.J. Abrams, is still up in the air. Just one of those things we'll probably have to wait and see about. Link

Production company Bad Robot has announced that filming has begun on Star Wars Episode VII.The tweet from director JJ Abrams' production company shows a Star Wars branded clapper board and was accompanied by the hashtag #dayone. It is believed that the first scenes are being filmed in Abu Dhabi which, according to reports, is standing in for Tatooine. Oscar Isaac, one of the recently confirmed actors for Episode VII told BBC Radio 4 on Wednesday that production was starting in the UK later this month. Carrie Fisher has been pretty vocal about her journey back to a galaxy far far away so far, and that still seems to be the case as she told reporters that she was thrilled to be asked to return for the sequel, but she had to lose 35 pounds to get the job. She also revealed that it was George Lucas himself who contacted her about the role. The official Star Wars Facebook page has also tweeted a picture of Pinewood Studios, suggesting an imminent start to filming there too. Click here to view the article

  12. Rumors have surfaced that Harrison Ford's part in Episode VII will be much bigger than that of Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher, who will be taking a backseat to him and the trio of young leads. Though not substantiated, it has come up before, so there could be truth in it. Some think that they may be giving this bigger part to Ford because they may be killing Solo off in VII... or maybe to just appease him for whether or not another Indy film is made--apparently his stipulation to join Star Wars again. Thoughts on having more Han, less Luke and Leia? Link

  15. Recent rumors suggest that some filming for Star Wars Episode VII may be done on location in Abu Dhabi. The Hollywood Reporter first published a few days ago a rumor that Star Wars was headed to Abu Dhabi, possibly to create scenes based on Tatooine. Now, Abu Dhabi newspaper The National has revealed what it claims are photographs that prove this rumor, showing some set detail from the upcoming movie. None of this proves that the Abu Dhabi desert is portraying Tatooine, the childhood home planet of both Anakin and Luke Skywalker, which has previously only been seen on film as Tunisia. It may well be that Abu Dhabi is playing host to another barren planet of the Star Wars galaxy, either newly created or already existing in canon. It may be worth mentioning that it has previously been rumored that the ancient Sith stronghold of Moraband/Korriban could feature in Episode VII, and is also known to be a largely barren desert planet. The National's article describes the large round object as bearing a resemblance to the escape pod used by R2-D2 and C-3PO in the original 1977 film, but to me it looks more like the bottom of an AT-AT's foot. Most intriguing. Click here to view the article

  17. During an interview for The Hollywood Reporter, Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn confirmed that shooting has begun for the latest episode of the Star Wars saga, and that while casting was not completely finished the main actors are all in place. Horn did not disclose any of the cast members but he did acknowledge the screen-writing problems the movie suffered last year and said that the screenplay, co-written by JJ Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan based on an early draft by Michael Arndt, was right where it needed to be. He also reiterated the previously stated release date of December 2015, and said that the movie would pick up 35 years after Return of the Jedi, which would seem to clash with a previous statement that pinned Episode VII at 30 years post-RotJ.

  19. Peter Mayhew has canceled an appearance at a convention due to take place during filming for Star Wars Episode VII.The veteran Star Wars actor who has played everybody's favorite wookiee Chewbacca in four Star Wars movies was due to appear at Texas' Comicpalooza in May, but a tweet sent out by the organisers announced his cancelation as being "due to filming". It was previously thought that Mayhew might miss the latest instalment of the Star Wars saga after he underwent double knee replacement surgery last year to combat his poor mobility caused by the same medical condition that gave him his towering stature. A casting call went out at around the same time as Mayhew's operation asking for a 7ft 3in actor, the same height as Chewbacca, leading to speculation that the character was to be recast as a result of his mobility problems. Of course, this is not an official confirmation of Peter Mayhew's involvement in the new film, but we hope to hear more news soon as the start of shooting draws ever closer. Edit: A source close to The Hollywood Reporter has since leaked Mayhew's return to Star Wars; reprising his role as Chewbacca. Click here to view the article
