Paintbrush -- Character List and Discussion

Recommended Posts

Mara

PREMISE--

It's the mid to late 1800s out in the American West. People are spreading out farther and farther away from the east coast. Some are headed to California for gold, others to just find some land and settle. Small towns also pop up along some of these routes, mainly one main roadway with a general store, a saloon and motel, sheriff's office, blacksmith, and the like, etc., etc.

Paintbrush, named so for the abundant amount of Indian paintbrush that grows around it, is one of these such small towns out somewheres beyond the Mississippi but southeast of the Rockies. It's a fairly established community with around 100 people living either in or nearby the limits.

A few miles south of the town, the local railroad is establishing a connection to the town, but as of yet, there is no actual station in Paintbrush. Until the station and tracks are completed, all travelers come by stagecoach, wagon or horse.

Many of the local men, when not working, hang around the Dusty Spur, the local saloon run by Miss Ellie Mae, or in Doc's General Store. (No one knows why it's named this, since the owner is neither a doctor nor named Doc).

It is mostly a peaceful area, and the sheriff and his deputy(ies) are kept fairly idle.

RULES --

All general roleplaying rules apply; hopefully by joining up here, you already know a fair deal about roleplaying. If not, just ask.

Keep it historically accurate, i.e. stay to weapons, clothing, etc. of the mid to late 1800s.

[Think time period of "The Wild Wild West" TV show and others similar or John Wayne/Clint Eastwood westerns, etc., etc.].

Only 2-3 characters per person. This limit may change in the future.

ODDS 'N' ENDS --

We'll probably need a sheriff, a deputy or two, some townspeople, various shopkeepers and business owners...piano player and/or dancer for the saloon... Maybe a rancher or two who comes into town to buy supplies every so often, maybe some high society Easterner stopping in at the hotel.... A doctor... anything a small western town would have...

There's a not a whole lot of structure, but that's because this is gonna be pretty much free-form without any set plots from myself.... We'll just play it by ear and see what happens when the characters get together.

I'll have more information on this later.... plus will post up my character later as well. Just wanted to sketch this out.

CHARACTERS--

Henry Akkers[played by Mara]

Gender: male

Age:

Occupation: owner of Doc's General Store and Trading Post

Appearance:

Personality:

Background:

Character in progress...

Roland Conway [Played by Joclad Danva]

Gender: Male

Age: mid-thirties

Occupation: Owner and clerk at Conway's Hardware Store

Appearances: Has the look of a worn traveller about him. Easily looks ten years older than he is. He's quite tall (1.95m) and has a full head of dark brown hair with a small white patch of hair where colour pigments seem to have been damaged by an injury. This has also given him a small scar to the side of the head. Has very pale blue eyes. His skin is slightly toned and his body is, although faded, still very musculary. He doesn't show it, he is seldom seen without his worn leather trenchcoat, cowboy hat and shoreboots. Usually wears a pair of worker's jeans and a plain brown cotton shirt underneath. People who have seen battles and the likings, recognise this man to be able to handle himself in battle, although normal folk don't notice it, people who 'deal in lead' will mark this man as someone not to be crossed.

Personality: Seem very introvert and keeps himself out of the spotlight. He has the feel of a person who has dealt with much in his past exploits. Settling down here, he has become a very calm person who keeps mainly to himself. Conway did seem to have befriended a dog, which he calls 'Rover'. Rising isolation has however made him a bit lonely, why he has started going to the Dusty Spur occasionaly to be surrounded with other people. Still slow to trust and fairly shy, he hasn't particularly befriended anyone in paintbrush yet, although he has found some poker-mates he often plays with at the saloon. Has realised that his social skills seem to be lacking and has vowed to change that. His voice is very low and his accent is pretty neutral, a hint of Irish can be detected, but he must have lost it during his travels.

Background: Was one of the people who didn't choose to come to America, being no longer safe in Britain and Europe. Was born in Ireland and at the age of 13 ran away from a broken family. He has done many crimes, never intentionally hurt anyone, but he has had to defend himself from pursuers on a number of occasions. Went seeking refuge in different countries (which explains why he sometimes mutters things in Dutch to his dog). Eventually it turned out the people chasing him hadn't forgotten him and he was once more forced to flee. He left the country of Scotland (where he had made some friends) with a case of the most finest Laphroaig Scotch and made the pass to America. Almost getting into trouble again on the East Coast, he decided to roam the west and eventually ended up in Paintbrush, looking to settle.

He has set up a shop which deals in lamps, shovels, pick axes and all kinds of hardware, he also has a limited offer of rifles and revolvers. Lives in a small modest house at the back of his store (in a sidestreet from the main road).

Special items: He carries two custom .45 Colts under his coat, most people don't even see them, but he always wears them when he goes out, because of the constant doubt that his pursuers from the other part of the world could finally catch up with him.

Still has half of the case of scotch and keeps it for very special occasions. Together with a pocket***ch and a hunting knife (which he always keeps on his person, or in reach) they are the only things he has taken with him from Europe.

Skills: Has some experience with weaponry and has a steady hand and a cool mind. On one occasion (when the Saloon was almost empty) he has proven himself to be an advanced pianoplayer. Has also bought a guitar lately and is, by surely being an annoyance to his neighbours, learning to play it. Has some knowledge of forging basic metal equipment (due to a short career as employee of a blacksmith) and is an excellent horseback rider (family were horse breeders) eventhough he no longer has one. Knows how to read and write and can work numbers. Can play a very good hand of poker, not excellent, he hasn't mastered bluffing (and is aware of that fact, so doesn't try it) but he can call a bluff like no other and tends to know his chances of winning with a certain hand. Obvious lack of social skills.

Other:

Rover

Crossbreed of a wolf and streetdog

Gender: Male

Age: 7 years old.

Occupation: Dog ^^

Appearances: Looks like a wolf with slightly less distinct features. Pelt is a mixture of brown, white and a bit of black.

Personality: Like his owner, very slow to trust and introvert. Very calm and will obey any of Roland's commands. Yet, strong and fast enough to be dangerous.

Background: Lived on the edge of the wilderness for a long time, eventually tried to venture further to the West, away from the cities. Got attacked by other wolves, when Roland passed by and scared the latter away. Took care of Rover and befriended him. They have been in each others company for 4 years now, which has granted them a strong bond.

Samuel John Edwards [played by Andy]

Gender: Male

Age: About 55-60

Occupation: Horologist (clock and watch maker/repairer), and local eccentric.

Appearance: Average height and build for his age, he has white hair and a short beard, and small round spectacles. During work hours he dresses smart and is neat and well groomed.

Personality: He is polite and seemingly the perfect gentleman, but is obsessive about clocks and watches which can usually put people off, especially when he brings up his project to build a time machine in his workshop. He spends many evenings playing cards in the bar.

Background: Samuel is the only member of his family living in Paintbrush, his family once had money but he spent it on his obsession with clocks and his impossible project.

Annie Hancock [played by Vergere/Marking Twain]

Age: 25

Occupation: Local Rancher

Appearance: Shoulder-length brown hair, always tied back into a ponytail. Her face is covered in freckles from being out in the sun all the time, as is her tanned skin. She wears a simple cotton shirt, jeans, boots, chaps, and a cowboy hat almost everywhere she goes. She has very toned muscles but is slim, and makes no attempt to look nice, unlike Ellie Mae. She'd prefer to be comfortable than pretty.

Personality: Cynical and sarcastic, she has a rather negative view of outsiders. She loves listening to conversation and has a sharp, if not stinging, wit, and is known to get into fights. However, she's much more comfortable around cattle and horses than most people. She once was rather sweet, but now is a much more callous woman on whom a harsh life has taken its toll. This being said, if people can befriend her, she's not nearly as callous and harsh as she tries to be. She tens to keep her cynicsm to outsiders and travellers, and doesn't like to irritate townsfolk she sees often.

Background: Having grown up as a rancher's daughter, she learned the ways of cattle ranching from him. When he passed away from illness, her older brother had taken the ranch, and she'd become a working partner with him. Then, only two years ago, he was injured and died of infection, leaving Annie the one in charge of the ranch.

Ellie Mae O'Rourke [played by Mara]

Gender: female

Age: around 27-29

Occupation: overseer of the Dusty Spur, a saloon

Appearance: Ellie Mae is of medium height and curvy build with medium-length curly strawberry blond hair and light green eyes with fair skin. She is sometimes given to wearing finery and prides herself in the flamboyantly colored dresses and gowns she sews up herself.

Personality: At first glance, she may look unapproachable, but that quickly changes when her whole face turns into a smile and her bubbly demeanor greets you. She speaks in a light-hearted mixture of Irish-tinted English and the drawl of the new American West.

Background: A decade ago she came over with her father Mickey O'Rourke from Ireland to find a better life. Her father had gotten lonely ever since her mother died, and having nothing left in their home country, they shipped out for the new rush for gold out in California.

They took to wandering around, looking for gold mines and plots, not being all too successful. When she was about 18 or 19, Ellie Mae left her father and traveled east, not sure where she wanted to go. Eventually her father joined her in Paintbrush when it was still developing, having a grand idea to open a pub just like back home. Mickey used up his last bit of coin to buy some fine Irish whiskey to begin his stock.

A year later he took to a fever and passed away, leaving the Dusty Spur to a young Ellie Mae to run. And run it, she has, ever since.

Janus Smith [played by Lucky]

Gender: Male

Age: 28

Occupation: Paintbrush Blacksmith

Appearance: Jan is taller than he appears, due to a slightly hunched back which he got from bending over a forge day in and day out. His hair is already starting to gray, but the majority of it and his mustache are still a dark brown color. He wears whatever's clean, and doesn't care much for his appearance.

Personality: To people who don't know him, he appears to be nonchalant towards everyone and everything, but in actuality, he's just trying to figure out what to do about the problems of those close to him and the needs of the town.

Background: Seven years ago, back east, around the major cities and towns of the time, the industrial revolution was beginning to take hold. Machines were taking over everything, leaving most people without a job. Jan, realizing that soon enough he wouldn't be needed anymore, packed up and decided to move out west where he knew blacksmiths were more needed.

Anything of his life before that is a total enigma, as Jan only changes the subject casually whenever someone asks him about it.

Yay, the more, the merrier!

Okay... I have decided, that in order to get this moving, I'll up the character limit per player up to 2-3... just so we can populate this town up.

So if you want to create more, go ahead.

Btw, this is my first post, but I've been reading on this forum for some time and really wanted to join in on this (huge Deadwood fan). First roleplaying game though, so warn me when I'm doing it wrong. :p I tend to type alot of stuff, so warn me when I overdo it aswell. :p

Oh and if you find some errors in my spelling or sentences, don't hesitate to tell. I'm Belgian, so this is great excercice for my English. ^^

Just noticed that. Great choice. ;)

Right.

Mara: Is there a railway in the area? If not could there be one being built, but not quite reached the town yet?

And my first character. Yes, this may seem silly, but shush. You can say "no" if you want to:

Samuel John Edwards

Gender: Male

Age: About 55-60

Occupation: Horologist (clock and watch maker/repairer), and local eccentric.

Appearance: Average height and build for his age, he has white hair and a short beard, and small round spectacles. During work hours he dresses smart and is neat and well groomed.

Background: Samuel is the only member of his family living in Paintbrush, his family once had money but he spent it on his obsession with clocks and his impossible project.

Sorry it's not more in depth. But in my defence my bios usually start off small and get bigger.

eg this:

Name: Jay Darksider

Age: 16

Background: Rumoured to be descended from an ancient Sith Lord, it is no wonder that he is strong in the Force, and often comes dangerously close to the dark side. Both of his parents were involved in the Rebellion but were offworld when their home planet was destroyed by the Empire. Soon after giving birth to Jay, they headed off into the Battle of Endor on the Liberty. Jay was adopted by and hidden away where he learned to use the Force. When Luke Skywalker opened the Jedi Academy on Yavin 4, he was taken there to become a fully trained Jedi Knight.

Welcome, Joclad! Glad to have you join in.

Don't worry about being longwinded... It's not problem. Your profile looks good...

I'll be starting up the RP thread later this week when I find some more time.

Umm...a railroad... I'll think about that. It's certainly something that could be added. Maybe Paintbrush was built up near a railway station or something.

And your profile is fine, too. They don't need to be huge.

There can not be one too. I could make a character that is something to do with the railroad and they intend on building one out through that way because the town is growing and such.

Thx for the welcoming, btw, I had written some more, but in order to keep his past a bit mysterious, I decided to shorten it so you people would have to find out about it later. :p

Anyway, could Samuel be bit less then average with the cards? ^^ We need ppl usually losing small amounts too, if we have those who usually win stuff. And after reading your bio, I thought it would suit his personality to make him keep coming back for more eventhough he keeps losing more than winning. ^^

Just a suggestion tho, your choice! ^^

No, the railroad is a fine idea. I just hadn't thought about it before.

Here's my thoughts: I would rather it would be either not there quite yet or maybe just halfway done.

I don't think I want there to be a finished railway station quite yet, as that would make Paintbrush a bigger town that it is right now, lol.

So maybe the railway is still a few miles away and the station has yet to be built in Paintbrush. Something like that.

Would that help you?
