Monthly Debate #5

Thank Prin for your monthly debate. So here's how it goes down.

This guy and girl have known each other for 8 years now. They date for a few months, then the guy says that there really isn't anything there and they go their separate ways.

Fast forward 5 years. They start talking again and are still the best of friends even after things are said and done. Eventually, though, by time and circumstance, they lose contact again for about 8 or 9 months and the girl meets another man and they end up married.

One day, the boy emails the girl and says that his sister told him that the girl was married and he's upset, almost sad that she didn't tell him. Should she have told him since they hadn't spoken in so long? The two start talking again and the friendship picks right back up where it left off.

Another 11 months pass and the guy mysteriously ends up engaged to a girl he had dated a while back and didn't particularly care for and the first person he calls is the girl. He hasn't told his sister, mom or anyone else. The girl's husband finds this odd.

A few months down the road, the boy marries the other woman, but right before the ceremony emails the girl and tells her to call him after the ceremony is done because he wants to talk to her. Wouldn't he want to talk to his new wife? The girl has things to take care of and by the time she gets around to calling the boy, it's too late so she decides to call him the next day so he can spend the night with his new wife.

The next morning the girl wakes up to find an email from the boy and his sister both that she didn't call him the night before.

Weird or no?

Sounds a bit like My Best Friend's Wedding.

And it defintely sounds like the guy thinks he made a mistake and wants the married girl.

Yeah... seems like the guy married the other girl to make his friend jealous or to fill the void she left or something.

that is strange. i mean there's nothing wrong with keeping in touch with old friends, but not at the expense of the spouse. that is very odd.

Odd but I don't really see how this is a debate topic.

basically, is what this guy doing appropriate at all seeing as both of them now have spouses?

If he wants to go beyond friendship.. yes, it's inappropriate.

Asking the girl to call the night after his wedding is just plain unheard of. Unless he's completely not attracted to his wife, he has better things to be doing right then. I concur with the general assessment of the guy still loves the girl in spite of their being married to different people now.

Is this inappropriate? If either of the couples is an exclusive pair, and have already talked about and eliminated the possibility of ever having an alternate sexual situation bringing in outsiders to their marriage, then yes, it is inappropriate. If both the couples have an understanding and allow outside sexual contact, then it's not inappropriate.
